SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's soccer team opened its home schedule on Wednesday, Aug. 15 with a convincing 8-0 exhibition win against Monroe College at the SU Soccer Stadium. Sophomore Grant Chong and freshman Jordan Vale led the way with two goals apiece. Freshman Stefanos Stamoulacatos and senior Louis Clark each contributed one goal and one assist as the Orange evened its exhibition record at 1-1. Â
Â
The format for the scrimmage was three 30-minute periods with an eight-minute break between sessions.
Â
Syracuse applied consistent pressure throughout the match and finished the game with 18 shots to the Mustangs' eight. Vale registered SU's first two tallies. He lifted the ball over the goalkeeper from the left side of the box in the 15th minute, and was the benefactor of a deflected ball which he chipped past the Monroe goalie in the 26th minute.
Â
Syracuse added a pair of goals in the second period, and closed the game with four third-period tallies to produce the final score.
Â
Orange freshman goalie Alex Bono started the match and made two saves during the first period, including a spectacular stop as he leapt to deflect a Mustang shot in the 21st minute. Redshirt freshman Andrew Coughlin held Monroe scoreless during the second frame, while classmate Matt Stith preserved the clean sheet in the final period.
Â
SU concludes its preseason slate when it visits head coach Ian McIntyre's alma mater, Hartwick College, on Friday, Aug. 17. Game time is 7 p.m. at Elmore Field.
