ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's soccer team concluded its exhibition schedule on Friday, Aug. 17 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Hartwick College. Skylar Thomas scored the match's only goal as SU finished its preseason slate with a 2-1 record going into next week's regular-season opener.
"Tonight was a good way to finish up our preseason games," Orange head coach Ian McIntyre said. "It was great to get a result on the road against a good team."
The match remained scoreless for the majority of the first period. The Orange had a good scoring chance in the 36th minute after multiple touches inside of the box, but could not convert. In the 42nd minute, SU capitalized on a free kick opportunity when Jordan Murrell sent the ball into the box and Thomas finished with a strike past the goalkeeper for what proved to be the winner.
Freshman goalie Alex Bono held the Hawks scoreless in the first period, and Andrew Coughlin preserved the clean sheet with a diving save in the 88th minute. Bono finishes the exhibition schedule without allowing a goal.
"We are growing as a team and we are growing up," said McIntyre. "We are very excited to start our campaign next week."
SU begins the regular season on Friday, Aug. 24 against Albany. The Orange hosts Great Danes at the SU Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
