NEWTON, Mass. – Despite dominating play in the second half, the Syracuse men's soccer team lost its first exhibition of the season, 2-0, to No. 14 Boston College on Monday, Aug. 13 at Newton Campus Field.
The Eagles registered both of the game's goals in the first half. Kyle Bekker scored an unassisted tally in the 11th minute and Charlie Rugg found the back of the net off a Bekker pass in the 34th minute.
The Orange applied consistent pressure in the opposing end during the second period, outshooting Boston College, 5-1, in the final 45 minutes. Freshman goalkeeper Alex Bono kept the last year's ACC runner-up scoreless in the second half, while redshirt freshman Andrew Coughlin started the game and recorded two saves in the opening frame.
Overall, the Eagles outshot Syracuse, 7-6, in an evenly played match.
"It was decent performance," Orange head coach Ian McIntyre said. "There were a lot of positives we can take out of this match and use as building blocks going forward."
One of those positives was the number of players that took the field for the Orange. Twenty-one of the squad's 27 players saw action in the contest and each played at least 14 minutes.
"We got a lot of guys involved today and a number of players made their first Syracuse appearances, so that was exciting."
Syracuse returns to the pitch on Wednesday, Aug. 15 when it faces Monroe College in an exhibition match at 5 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free.
