SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men's soccer team (12-5-0, 5-3-0 BIG EAST) hosts its first postseason match in program history when it battles No. 7 Notre Dame (13-3-1, 5-2-1) in the BIG EAST Championship quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
Admission is free, and live video for the match is available on Orange All Access.
SU IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
This is the Orange's 14th BIG EAST Tournament appearance. Overall, Syracuse is 7-10-1 (.417) in conference tournament play with two titles (1982, 1985). The Orange's last quarterfinal appearance was in 2000.
SCOUTING NOTRE DAME
The Fighting Irish own a 13-3-1 overall record. Notre Dame finished third in the Blue Division (5-3-1 record) and received one of the division's byes into the quarterfinals. Notre Dame is ranked No. 7 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25 poll, and the Irish currently sit atop the NCAA RPI rankings.
Ryan Finley is second nationally in goals (17) and third in the NCAA in points (37). Finley has been named national player of the week twice by both TopDrawerSoccer.com and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Patrick Wall and Will Walsh have shared goalkeeping duties for Notre Dame. Wall has a goals-against average of 0.75 with seven victories and three shutouts, while Walsh has posted a 0.87 goals-against average with six wins and four shutouts.
Bobby Clark is in his 11th season as head coach of the Fighting Irish, posting a .663 winning percentage during his tenure. He has guided Notre Dame to 10 NCAA appearances, a BIG EAST tournament title in 2003 and three BIG EAST regular-season championships. A two-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year honoree, Clark led the Fighting Irish to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2006 and 2007.
THE NOTRE DAME SERIES
Saturday's match marks the 14th meeting between Syracuse and Notre Dame. The Irish leads the overall series, 9-2-2. SU's last victory in the series was in 1997 (1-0).
The last time Notre Dame visited the SU Soccer Stadium was in 2005 when it defeated the hometown Orange, 1-0. The two teams have met one in BIG EAST Championship play with the sides drawing, 0-0, in the opening round of the 2005 tournament (Notre Dame advanced on penalties, 4-2).
RECAPPING THE ST. JOHN'S MATCH
The Orange traveled to St. John's for its final regular season match on Friday, Oct. 26. Despite keeping the Red Storm off of the scoreboard for the first 77 minutes of the contest, SU conceded a goal to break a scoreless tie to give St. John's a 1-0 victory.
