RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Louis Clark scored with 2:14 left in the second overtime to lift the SU men's soccer team (14-6-0) to a 3-2 victory against No. 19 VCU (12-4-5) in the second round of the NCAA Championship Sunday, Nov. 18 at Sports Backers Stadium. Clark's golden goal completed an SU comeback that saw the team rally from a 2-0 deficit against the 14th-seeded Rams.
Clark totaled a game-high four points. In addition to the game-winner, he also scored the Orange's first goal. It was the type of performance Syracuse needed after falling behind 2-0 before even attempting a shot.
"I am extremely proud of our team, which showed tremendous character and resolve," SU head coach Ian McIntyre said. "Tonight was a fantastic college match."
The Rams got on the board in the ninfth minute when Juan Monge Solano scored on a free kick from 40 yards out. Less than six minutes later, Dennis Castillo converted a penalty kick, which was awarded as a result of an Orange handball inside the box, to extend the VCU lead to 2-0.
Syracuse trimmed the margin to one in the 21st minute as Clark notched his first goal of the evening.
In the 30th minute, senior Ted Cribley connected with freshman Stefanos Stamoulacatos, whose shot deflected off VCU goalie Andrew Wells and into the corner of the goal for the equalizer.
In the first overtime, the Rams outshot the Orange, 3-0, but none of their attempts found the mark.
Finally, in the 108th minute, the Orange earned the chance it needed. Jordan Vale sent a well-placed serve to Clark, who drove to the left side of the box and fired back to his right for the match-winner.
