WASHINGTON – Jordan Vale scored his ninth goal of the season in the first half, but Georgetown (18-3-3) registered the equalizer in the 85th minute and eliminated the Orange (14-6-1) on penalty kicks, 4-2, in the third round of the 2012 NCAA Championship Sunday, Nov. 25 at North Kehoe Field.
"I am extremely proud of our guys. They had a tremendous season," said SU head coach Ian McIntyre. "We'll take some time to reflect on the campaign, but today, you saw the character and resolve of this group. They left everything on the field."
The underdog Orange put pressure on the Hoyas from the outset, and took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute when Vale headed a Jordan Murrell free kick past Georgetown keeper Tomas Gomez.
Following Vale's goal, the Orange successfully defended for the remainder of the first half, including fighting off a Hoya free kick from just outside the box, and a corner kick, with less than a minute go.
The Hoyas controlled the possession for most of the second half, outshooting the Orange 12-1 in the period. SU deflected several free kicks and crosses to preserve the lead, including a two-shot flurry and ensuing corner kick in the 70th minute. Two minutes later, SU freshman goalkeeper Alex Bono made a diving save on an Ian Christianson chance to maintain the advantage.
Georgetown continued to pressure the Orange and finally broke through when 2012 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Brandon Allen scored off a rebound in the 85th minute to force overtime.
Four minutes into the extra session Allen made another run at the Orange goal, but Bono calmly gathered Allen's attempt. Bono deflected another Hoya shot in the 98th minute to send the match into a second overtime.
Syracuse rookie Stefanos Stamoulacatos had Orange's best chance in the second extra session, but his shot from the top of the box sailed high.
In the shootout, Georgetown made all four of its attempts and gained the advantage when SU's Juuso Pasanen missed wide in the first round. Senior Mark Brode and Nick Perea made their kicks to keep the Orange alive before a save by Gomez on Murrell clinched it for the Hoyas.
Bono finished the match with eight saves, tying his career high, while Gomez stopped one shot for Georgetown.
The Orange finishes the campaign with 14 wins, the most for an SU side since 1986 (16). Other season milestones included the team's second NCAA berth, and first-ever tournament victories (Cornell and VCU). In addition, the Orange qualified for the BIG EAST Championship for the first time since 2005, and hosted the first postseason match in program history (BIG EAST quarterfinal vs. Notre Dame on Nov. 3).
Match Notes: Bono's eight saves equaled his own SU NCAA Tournament record set last weekend at VCU ... Prior to the Georgetown match, the last SU game decided by penalties was against Notre Dame in the first round of the 2005 BIG EAST Championship.
