ITHACA, N.Y. – Lars Muller scored in the 10th minute and the Orange defense recorded its 12th shutout of the season as the SU men's soccer team (13-6-0) defeated No. 11 Cornell, 1-0, on Thursday, Nov. 15 at Berman Field. The victory marked the first NCAA Tournament win in program history.
"It was an outstanding, hard-fought national tournament game," SU head coach Ian McIntyre said. "I am very proud of our guys to find a way to come into a difficult environment and get a result."
The Orange was the more dangerous team early and got on the board at the 9:04 mark. Tyler Hilliard sent a well-placed cross into the box. Muller turned, and fired a sliding shot past Cornell goalkeeper Rick Pflasterer into the left side of the goal.
The Syracuse defense handled the rest as it continually turned away Big Red scoring opportunities. Cornell (15-2-0), the 2012 Ivy League champion, outshot Syracuse 17-10 in the match, including an 8-3 margin in the second half, but the defense never faltered.
In the process, the group shut down the NCAA's third-leading goal scorer and Ivy League Player of the Year Daniel Haber. Haber attempted six shots, but never found the back of the net.
Sophomore Chris Makowski anchored the defensive unit and freshman goalie Alex Bono made three saves to earn his 10th shutout of the year.
Pflaster also finished with three saves for the Big Red.
With the victory, the Orange advances to the NCAA second round where it will face 14th-seeded VCU on Sunday, Nov. 18. Match time is 7 p.m. at Sports Backers Stadium. Tickets for match are $10 for adults and $5 children. They can be purchased online at VCUathletics.com or by phone at (804) 828-7267.
