QUEENS, N.Y. – The SU men's soccer team (12-5-0, 5-3-0 BIG EAST) concluded its winningest regular season since 1988 with a 1-0 loss at No. 18 St. John's (10-3-4, 4-3-1 BIG EAST)) on Friday, Oct. 26 at Belson Stadium. Syracuse kept the Red Storm scoreless for the majority of the match until forward Brandon Savino tallied the game-winner in the 78th minute.
"Tonight was a very good college match," said SU head coach Ian McIntyre. "It was a tough environment against a quality team. Overall, I am proud of the commitment and effort of our guys, but credit St. John's for scoring the goal."
St. John's outshot the Orange in the opening frame, 6-0. However, rookie goalkeeper Alex Bono made two saves, including a deflection that denied a Jelani Williams attempt in the 39th minute, to keep the match scoreless.
SU controlled the tempo in the second half, recording six out of the first seven shots after the break. The Orange also attempted three corner kicks in the frame, but was unable to capitalize.
St. John's broke through when Savino pushed one by Bono at the 77:58 mark, snapping the scoreless tie. The Orange nearly tied the match before the final horn, but Red Storm goalie Rafael Diaz came up with a diving save on freshman Jordan Vale with two seconds left to seal the win.
Bono made two saves in the match, while Diaz registered four stops.
Syracuse continues the 2012 season in the BIG EAST Championship quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov. 3. The Orange will face the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST's Blue Division at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Match Notes: The loss snaps Syracuse's three-game winning streak … Savino's goal broke a 368:07 shutout streak for the SU defense.
