LOUDONVILLE, N.Y.- The Syracuse men's soccer team hits the road to face in-state foe, Siena (1-2-0), on Sunday, Sept. 4 at the Siena Turf Field. Game time is set for 12 p.m. The Orange (1-1-0) is coming off its first win of the season, defeating Canisius in its home opener. The Saints lost to Hartford, 1-0, in their last game.
LAST TIME OUT
The Orange scored two early goals and defeated Canisius, 2-1, Thursday at the SU Soccer Stadium to record its first win of the season. Freshman Skylar Thomas and senior Federico Agreda scored in the span of 2:20 in the opening half to lead the Orange to victory.
Syracuse came out firing early in the first half. In the 11th minute, senior Nick Roydhouse sent a corner kick towards the goal. Canisius junior goalkeeper Kareem Gray could not handle the ball and Thomas headed in the rebound to give SU a 1-0 advantage.
Less than three minutes later, junior Ted Cribley crossed the ball into the box. Senior Dan Summers collected the pass and fed Agreda, who fired the ball past Gray for a 2-0 Orange lead.
That's how the score remained until the latter stages of the second half. The Golden Griffins managed to close the gap to 2-1, recording a goal off a penalty kick in the 77th minute. Canisius junior Jared Ott put the ball past Orange goalkeeper Phil Boerger for the team's lone tally after an SU foul in the penalty area.
Despite conceding a goal, the Orange successfully defended for the remainder of the contest to close out the Golden Griffins.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS
Siena opened the 2011 regular season by playing two games in the Penn State Classic in University Park, Pa. After losing to the host Nittany Lions, 1-0, the Saints rebounded with a 1-nil victory against No. 15 Ohio State. The team's win against the Buckeyes marked its first victory over a nationally-ranked team in program history. Sophomore Joe Miner scored the Saints' lone tally. Miner and Syracuse redshirt junior Ryan Jones were teammates at Shenendehowa High School.
The Saints then traveled to Hartford, Conn to face the University of Hartford on Thursday. Freshman goalie Jack Binks made three saves in a 1-0 loss to the Hawks.
Sophomore Joe Beeston is Siena's leading returning scorer after recorded 17 points on four goals and nine assists in 2010. Binks has eight saves and owns a 0.67 goals against average in 2011.
