SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Marquette (3-4-1, 1-0-0) scored in the 88th minute to hand the Orange (2-5-0, 0-1-0) a 3-2 loss on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the SU Soccer Stadium in the BIG EAST opener for both teams. Freshman C. Nortey tallied the game-winning goal for the Golden Eagles.
Syracuse was aggressive at the start and wasted no time gaining an early lead. In the 22nd minute, senior Dan Summers played a through ball to junior Mark Brode. Brode collected the pass and sent a strike in from the top of the box. Marquette junior goalkeeper David Check could not handle the shot and Syracuse took a 1-0 lead.
Only four minutes later, Marquette responded with a goal of its own. Nortey headed in a cross from senior Calum Mallace to tie the game at 1-1.
A little over seven minutes in to the second half, junior Lars Muller collected a corner kick from senior Nick Roydhouse and put it past Check o give Syracuse a 2-1 margin. The goal was the first of Muller's career.
Marquette junior Chris Madsen evened the score 14 minutes later by beating senior goalkeeper Phil Boerger off a through ball from sophomore Bryan Ciesiulka.
The match remained deadlocked until the 88th minute when the Golden Eagles finally broke the tie on Nortey's second tally of the game. Nortey pushed the ball past Boerger after collecting a header from sophomore Eric Pothast.
Both teams played attacking soccer for nearly the entire game. It showed in the box score as Syracuse held a 25-20 shot advantage over Marquette. Boerger made a career-best nine saves for the Orange. Check also established a personal best, recording 12 stops.
The Orange returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 27. Syracuse hosts Binghamton at 7 p.m. in the SU Soccer Stadium. Live video of Tuesday's contest will be available live on SUathletics.com via Orange All-Access.
