AKRON, Ohio – No. 16 New Mexico (5-0-2) scored six minutes into the extra frame to hand the Syracuse men's soccer team (2-4-0) its second loss at the University of Akron Tournament. Junior Devon Sandoval scored both goals for the Lobos, including the game-winner in the sixth minute of overtime.
The teams were scoreless through the first 45 minutes. New Mexico was the aggressor on offense for the majority of the first half, outshooting Syracuse, 7-2.
In the second half, New Mexico's persistence paid off and the Lobos went ahead when Sandoval collected a cross from junior Levi Rossi and tapped it past Orange senior goalkeeper Phil Boerger to take a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse tied the match just 80 seconds later. Freshman Chris Makowski sent in a cross from the left flank. Classmate Jordan Murrell received the pass and rifled a shot past New Mexico junior keeper Victor Rodriguez for the equalizer.
Neither team scored for the remainder of regulation and for the third time in six outings SU went to overtime. In the third minute of extra time, senior Nick Roydhouse generated the Orange's best opportunity to win the match, but his shot sailed high.
In the 96th minute, Sandoval teamed up with Rossi again. This time, Sandoval headed home a Rossi pass to give the Lobos a 2-1 victory.
Boerger helped keep Syracuse within striking distance, making five saves in the loss. Rodriguez finished with one save for the Lobos.
Murrell and Roydhouse were both named to the all-tournament team for their efforts against New Mexico and Cal Poly.
Syracuse returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 when it hosts Marquette in its BIG EAST opener at the SU Soccer Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Match Notes: Murrell's goal represented the first points of his college career … Makowski also earned his first career point, assisting on Murrell's tally … Junior Lars Muller made the first start of his Syracuse career in the match.
