AKRON, Ohio – The Syracuse men's soccer team (2-3-0) rallied late, but ultimately could not tie the game against Cal Poly and lost 2-1 on Friday, Sept. 16 in the opening match of the University of Akron Tournament at First Energy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field. Sophomore Mac Prindham tallied what would be the game-winning goal for the Mustangs in the 49th minute.Â
Cal Poly (3-1-2) wasted no time gaining an early lead in the contest. In the 14th minute, senior Kyle Montgomery took a shot from the top of the box and the ball deflected off the far post and over the goal line to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
Throughout the rest of the first half, Cal Poly continued to be the aggressor on offense. The Mustangs outshot the Orange, 5-2, in the opening stanza. Senior goalkeeper Phil Boerger kept Syracuse in the game, making two saves in the first 45 minutes of play.
Cal Poly maintained the advantage in the second half, and in the 49th minute, Prindham pushed the Mustang lead to 2-0 on a shot from seven yards out.
Nearly two minutes later, the Orange responded as senior Nick Roydhouse collected a rebound from his own shot and scored to cut the Cal Poly lead to 2-1.
Syracuse continued to apply pressure on offense looking for the equalizer. Junior Louis Clark had a shot turned away by Mustang goalkeeper Patrick McLain in the 68th minute. In the 83rd minute, junior Lars Muller had a shot go over the crossbar. Clark had another attempt to tie the game in the 88th minute, but once again McLain came up with the save. A minute later, freshman Nick Perea's header sailed wide of the goal. It was the Orange's last shot attempt of the match.
Boerger recorded three saves for the Orange in the loss. McLain finished with four saves in goal for the Mustangs.
The Orange returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 16 when it plays No. 16 New Mexico in its final game at the University of Akron Tournament. Kickoff is 12 p.m.
