SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's soccer team returns to the friendly confines of the SU Soccer Stadium when it hosts American (1-3-1) on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. Admission is free and live video of the match is available on Orange All Access.
In its last game, the Orange (1-2-0) suffered a 2-1 overtime loss at Siena. The team was scheduled to host Adelphi on Thursday, Sept. 8, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather and poor field conditions. American lost to Liberty, 2-1, in double overtime on Friday, Sept. 9 in its most recent outing.
ORANGE TO HOLD BREAST CANCER AWARENESS DAY
Sunday's match has been dubbed the “Kick for the Cure.” The team will don pink jerseys versus the Eagles to show its support for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and its mission to find a cure for breast cancer. Team representatives will be collecting donations at the gate and hosting a silent auction with all proceeds going to the foundation.
A FAMILY AFFAIR
Sunday's game will be a family affair for two of the participants. SU freshman Chris Makowski will take the field against his brother, American senior goalkeeper Matt Makowski. Both brothers have started every game this season for their respective teams.
Matt is in his fourth year as the Eagles' starting goalkeeper. He earned All-Patriot League honors in 2010 and was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2008. Chris is a stalwart on the Orange defense.
The Makowskis attended Faith Christian Academy in Pennsylvania. Chris graduated as the all-time leading scorer in school history.
THOMAS TALLIES TWO
In just the second game of his collegiate career, freshman Skylar Thomas notched his first collegiate goal in the 11th minute to help lead the Orange to a 2-1 victory at home against Canisius on Sept 1. Thomas scored his second goal in as many games when he scored on a header at Siena on Sept. 4 in the 75th minute.
With his next goal, Thomas will become the first SU freshman to score at least three goals in one season since Hansen Woodruff accomplished the feat in 2006. On the opposite end of the pitch, Thomas has started every game on defense for Syracuse this season.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Through five games, American has put together a record of 1-3-1, highlighted by a 1-1 draw with #15 Ohio State and a 3-2 win over rival George Washington.
The win against GW had added meaning, as the victory gave head coach Todd West his 100th career win. Entering his 12th season at the helm of the Eagles, West has compiled an overall career record of 100-92-26.
So far 10 players have tallied at least one point for the Eagles. Junior Alassane Kane leads the club with two goals. Colin Seigfreid is American's top playmaker. He has a team-best two assists.
Matt Makowski has started in net for the Eagles since his freshman season. Last year, Makowski was selected to the All-Patriot League Second Team. He has 28 saves through five games in 2011.
THE SERIES AGAINST AMERICAN
Sunday's game will mark the second time Syracuse and American will meet. American edged the Orange, 2-1, last season in the first series meeting. The Eagles netted two goals in the first 17 minutes of the match to gain a 2-0 advantage. SU's Nick Roydhouse notched the only goal of the second half in the 46th minute on a penalty kick to produce the final score.
UP NEXT
Syracuse will play two games next weekend at Akron's First Energy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field as part of the University of Akron Tournament. The Orange will face Cal Poly in the tournament's opening match on Friday, Sept. 16 at 5 p.m. and will square off against New Mexico on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 12 p.m.
