SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's soccer team opened its exhibition schedule on Friday, Aug. 19 with a 4-0 win against Herkimer County Community College (HCCC) at the SU Soccer Stadium. Senior Dan Summers led the Orange with two goals in his SU debut. Junior Louis Clark and senior #L.J. Papaleo# also had goals in the victory.
The format for the scrimmage was three 30-minute periods with a five-minute break between sessions.
Syracuse was the aggressor early and gained the advantage in the fifth minute. Junior Ted Cribley, a former NJCAA All-American at Herkimer, crossed the ball to Clark and he one-timed it past Generals' goalie Erik Szczerba to give SU a 1-0 lead.
Following Clark's strike, SU extended its margin to 2-0 in the 19th minute when Summers redirected home a free kick from senior Nick Roydhouse for his first goal of the night. Eight minutes later Summers struck again, tapping in a pass from Clark to give the hosts a commanding 3-0 advantage.
Herkimer controlled much of the second period, tallying nine shots to Syracuse's two in the frame, however, redshirt junior Ryan Jones made four saves in the period to preserve the clean sheet.
Papaleo closed the game's scoring in the 85 minute. He collected a rebound off a shot by freshman Brandon Albert and tucked it in to produce the final score.
Senior goalie Phil Boerger started in goal for the Orange. He played the first 30 minutes and made two saves before being relieved by Jones. Freshman Andrew Coughlin played the third period. He was not tested.
The Orange returns to action on Monday, Aug. 22 when it concludes its exhibition schedule with a match at Division II Le Moyne. Kickoff is 2 p.m. at the Athletic Turf Complex.
