SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior goalie John Galloway of the Syracuse men's lacrosse team and senior Kuba Kotynia of the Orange men's swimming & diving team were named to the Capital One Academic All-District I At-Large First Team on Thursday, May 19. It's the second straight academic all-district nod for both Galloway and Kotynia.
By virtue of their placement on the district's first team, Galloway and Kotynia are eligible for the national Academic All-America ballot, which will be voted upon by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A 2010 Capital One Second Team Academic All-American, Galloway earned a degree in public relations from Syracuse's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. In 2010-11, Galloway was Syracuse's male recipient of the BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Award, and he's a current finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award presented to the nation's most outstanding men's lacrosse student-athlete.
On the field, Galloway is a finalist for the 2011 Tewaaraton Trophy as the player of the year in college lacrosse. The reigning two-time BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, Galloway ranks fourth nationally in goals-against average (6.77). He has 136 saves and a .567 save percentage this season.
Galloway's career numbers are even more impressive. He is the NCAA's career leader in wins (59) and he's tied with UMBC's Jeremy Blevins for the most minutes played in NCAA history (3,712). Galloway's 7.35 career goals-against average is seventh all-time.
Kotynia graduated with a degree in math and computer science. He's been named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team three times.
A two-time All-BIG EAST honoree, Kotynia holds the Syracuse records in both the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke events.
To be eligible for the Academic All-America program, student-athletes must achieve sophomore standing at their current school and possess a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.3. Participants in fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling are eligible for the men's at-large program.
