SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Widely considered the biggest upset of the 2010 college lacrosse season, Army ended Syracuse's bid for three consecutive NCAA titles with a 9-8, double-overtime win in the opening round of last year's NCAA Championship. Nine months later, the 18th-ranked Black Knights (1-1) return to the Carrier Dome Sunday, Feb. 27 to face No. 2 Syracuse (1-0) at 4 p.m. in their annual regular-season meeting.
The Orange is coming off a 13-7 home win versus Denver in its season opener on Feb. 20. Army carries a record of 1-1 into the contest. The Black Knights lost on the road to Massachusetts (8-5) on Feb. 12 before picking up their first win of the year on Feb. 19 at VMI, 12-6.
Tickets are available online at SUathletics.com, over the phone (1-888-DOMETIX), or in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office during normal business hours. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for youth ages 12 and under. 'Cuse Kids Club members get in free with their membership card. Parking is $10.
The game will be televised live in the Syracuse area on Time Warner Sports and simulcast on SportsNet New York (SNY). Fans can also hear the action live on the radio home of the Orange - TK 99 (99.5 FM). Live streaming video and audio are available on SUathletics.com as part of Orange All-Access.
LACROSSE ELITE
Sunday's game features two of the five winningest teams in Division I college lacrosse. The Orange and Black Knights have combined to win 1,524 games. Syracuse is second all-time with 807 victories. Army's 717 wins ranks fifth all-time.
A FAMILY AFFAIR
Orange sophomore JoJo Marasco will see a familiar face on the Army sideline Sunday. His older brother, Matt Marasco, is a senior defenseman for the Black Knights. Matt has started Army's first two games of the 2011 season and has two caused turnovers. JoJo tallied two goals and two assists in his first college start last week against Denver.
ORANGE DISPLAYS OFFENSIVE BALANCE
Syracuse's offensive depth was on full display in its season-opening victory against Denver on Feb. 20. The Orange had eight players score goals in its 13-7 victory, including five players with two tallies (Marasco, Tim Desko, Stephen Keogh, Josh Amidon and Jovan Miller). Seven different players found the cage in the opening half to spur SU to a 7-3 lead at the intermission. It wasn't until Marasco scored with 9:41 left in the third quarter that SU had a player score multiple goals.
WELCOME TO SYRACUSE
Junior Tommy Palasek made the most of his Orange debut, tying his career high with two assists in the team's season-opening victory against Denver. Palasek, who joined the Orange in January after spending two years at Johns Hopkins, fed Keogh for a goal in the second quarter to record his first point in an Orange uniform. In the third quarter, Palasek fought off two Denver defenders and found Desko in front of the cage for a highlight-reel goal that put SU in front, 12-5.
SCOUTING THE BLACK KNIGHTS
Defensively, Army has been solid, allowing 7.0 goals per game in its first two outings. The defensive unit is anchored by a pair of seniors in Tully native Bill Henderson and goalie Tom Palesky. Henderson is the 2011 Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Palesky has 25 saves in Army's first two games, including seven in the team's win against VMI.
Senior attackman, and Baldwinsville native, Jeremy Boltus is Army's top offensive threat. The Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Boltus leads Army in goals (4), assists (5) and points (9). He tallied two goals and four assists in the VMI game. Sophomore Garrett Thul (3 goals) is a nice complement to Boltus at attack. Alex Van Krevel (3 goals), Rob McCallion and Devin Lynch (1 assist) are Army's top midfield line. Lynch scored the winner with 5.7 seconds left in the second OT in last year's NCAA win versus the Orange.
THE SYRACUSE-ARMY SERIES
The Black Knights lead the all-time series, 39-19. Army dominated the rivalry's early years, but has beaten the Orange just four times since 1980. One of those was last season's NCAA victory, which was just the Orange's second postseason loss ever at the Carrier Dome. Syracuse has won 14 of the last 16 meetings dating back to 1984, including a 12-7 regular-season victory in 2010. The Orange is 8-2 against the Black Knights since the two programs began playing annually in 2002.
UP NEXT
Syracuse hosts rival Virginia on Friday, March 4 at 6 p.m. inside the Carrier Dome. The annual matchup is always one of the most anticipated of the season. Last time the Cavaliers visited Syracuse, a crowd of 16,595 turned out to witness a 13-12 Virginia victory. The game will be televised live nationally on ESPNU.
