CHICAGO – The Syracuse men's soccer team (3-11-1, 1-6-1) heads into its final match of the regular season with its hopes of making the BIG EAST Tournament still intact. The team will travel to Chicago to face DePaul (5-10-2, 2-5-1) on Saturday, Oct. 29, looking to lock up the BIG EAST Red Division's final postseason berth. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Wish Field.
Currently, the Orange is three points behind the Blue Demons in the league standings. For SU to make its first postseason appearance since 2005, the team would have to win at DePaul. With the victory, Syracuse would be tied with the Blue Demons with seven points in BIG EAST play. The Orange would possess the tie-breaker, owning a head-to-head victory against DePaul.
BOERGER HOLDS THE LINE
The play of senior goalkeeper Phil Boerger has kept Syracuse in every match this season. In the Orange's last game against Villanova, Boerger made eight saves and kept the Wildcats scoreless for 109 minutes of play. With his eight saves, Boerger brought his career total up to 177.
Earlier this year, Boerger earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week and CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performers of the Week Honor Roll accolades for his performance against No. 11 Louisville. He made seven saves against the Cardinals to record his first clean sheet of 2011.
For the season, Boerger has played every minute for the Orange in goal. He has 72 saves and holds a 1.65 goals-against average. Boerger is currently second in the BIG EAST in saves per game (4.8) and third in saves. In addition, he is tied for 32nd in saves and 47th in saves per game nationally.
MULLER HAS CAREER NIGHT
Junior Lars Muller recorded one goal and two assists this past Saturday against Cincinnati. Muller's four point-night was a career-best for the Brandenburg, Germany native.
Muller has played in 10 matches this season, starting five. With seven points on the year, he ranks third on the team in scoring. Against Marquette on Sept. 24, the junior forward recorded his first career goal. Muller tallied his first collegiate point on an assist against Binghamton on Sept. 27.
Muller came to Syracuse after playing two seasons at Otto Von Guericke University in Germany. There, he was an all-region player and the 2009-10 BSC Sud 05 Player of the Year.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEMONS
DePaul is currently 5-10-2 overall and 2-5-1 in conference play. In the team's last match, the Blue Demons lost at home to Louisville, 1-0.
Junior Antonio Aguilar leads the team in scoring this season with 18 points (seven goals, four assists). He currently ranks fifth in the league in points. Aguilar and freshman David Selvaggi, who also has seven goals, are tied for fifth in the BIG EAST in goals scored. Sophomore Eric Sorby has handled the Blue Demons' goalkeeping duties for the majority of the year. In his 12 matches, Sorby has 54 saves and holds a 1.45 goals-against average.
Craig Blazer is in his 11th year as the head coach of DePaul. Blazer owns an overall record of 69-114-25.
THE SERIES AGAINST DEPAUL
Saturday's meeting is the seventh between Syracuse and DePaul. The Blue Demons currently hold a slight 3-2-1 edge in the all-time series.
The Orange and Blue Demons have met every season since 2005 when DePaul joined the BIG EAST. The first matchup between the two teams went DePaul's way, as the Blue Demons recorded a 1-0 victory on October 1, 2005.
Last year, the two squads played to a scoreless draw in Syracuse.
