SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men's soccer team hosts Villanova in its final home game of the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 26. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission to the game is free and live video will be available on Orange All Access.
SU enters the match with an overall record of 3-10-1 and a mark of 1-5-1 in BIG EAST play. In its last game, the Orange exploded for four goals a 4-2 victory against Cincinnati. That same day, Villanova lost 2-1 to USF. The Wildcats are 5-7-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the BIG EAST.
CLARK EARNS BIG EAST HONORS
Syracuse junior forward Louis Clark was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, Oct. 24 for his performance against Cincinnati this past Saturday. Clark recorded a career-best six points on two goals and two assists to lead the Orange to its first conference win of the season.
The Brighton, England native had a hand in all four SU goals against the Bearcats. Clark scored the first goal in the 47th minute and tallied the team's last goal in the 77th minute. In between, he recorded helpers on goals by freshman Grant Chong and junior Lars Muller. Clark's six points were the most by an SU player since Spencer Schomaker had six (three goals) on Oct. 21, 2008.
For the season, Clark has played in 10 matches with nine starts. He leads the team in scoring with 14 points (six goals, two assists) and he's tied for eighth in the BIG EAST in both points and goals.
CHONG BREAKS INTO THE SCORING COLUMN
Rookie Grant Chong scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the Cincinnati win. The strike came in the 73rd minute and proved to be the eventual game-winner.
Chong came to Syracuse from Brighton High School in Michigan. During his final season at Brighton, Chong earned Kensington Lakes Activity Association (KLAA) All-Conference honors as well as all-district, all-region and all-state accolades.
ORANGE SEEKING BIG EAST BERTH
With two games remaining, Syracuse is in control of its own destiny in its attempt to qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament. If the Orange wins its final two matches, the team will earn its first berth in the league championship since 2005. The top six teams from each division advance to the conference tournament, which begins on Wednesday, Nov. 2.
With victories against Villanova and DePaul, SU would have 10 points in BIG EAST play. Both Villanova and DePaul could finished tied with Syracuse, but the Orange would own the tiebreaker.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Through 16 games, Villanova holds an overall record of 5-7-4, including a BIG EAST Conference mark of 2-4-1. Last time out, the Wildcats traveled to Tampa, Fla. and lost to USF, 2-1.
Villanova's offensive attack is led by sophomore Dylan Renna. The sophomore has 10 points on three goals and four assists. Senior John Fogarty has started every game in goal for the Wildcats this year. Fogarty has 70 saves and holds a 1.01 goals-against average. His 70 saves rank second in the BIG EAST.
Tom Carlin is in his fourth season as the head coach of Villanova. Prior to his stint as the coach of the Wildcats, he served as the head coach of Arcadia University. Carlin holds an overall record of 128-56-20.
