SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Louis Clark tallied two goals to propel the Syracuse men's soccer team (3-10-1, 1-5-1) to a 4-2 victory against Cincinnati (5-10-1, 1-6-0) on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The win marked the team's first BIG EAST win in two seasons and head coach Ian McIntyre's first conference victory.
Neither team recorded a goal in the opening stanza, but the two teams combined for six in the second half.
Each team challenged the opposing goalkeeper with a flurry of shots in the opening 45 minutes. Orange senior goalkeeper Phil Boerger recorded five stops, while redshirt freshman Taylor Hafling made three saves for the Bearcats in the first half to keep the match scoreless.
Coming out of halftime, the Orange seized the momentum with an early tally. In the 47th minute, junior Lars Muller picked up a loose ball in front of the Cincinnati goal. Muller passed the ball to Clark who tapped it past Hafling to put SU in front, 1-0.
After conceding the game's first goal, Cincinnati recovered and tied the game nine minutes later. Freshman Cole DeNormandie fired a shot from just inside the box. It carromed off the crossbar and into the net for his seventh goal of the season.
Syracuse reclaimed the lead in the 70th minute. Clark crossed the ball into the box and freshman Skylar Thomas headed it towards the Cincinnati goal. Muller finished the play to give the Orange a 2-1 advantage.
Only three minutes after Muller's score, Syracuse tallied what proved to be the game-winner when Grant Chong notched the first goal of his career to give SU a 3-1 lead. Clark and Muller both were credited with assists on the play.
Clark capped off the night with his second goal in the 77th minute. He made a spectacular run down the right side of the field and chipped the ball over the Cincinnati keeper to push the Orange lead to 4-1.
Cincinnati attempted a rally with Michael Millay scoring nearly two minutes later to cut the Syracuse lead to 4-2. However, that's as close as the visitors could get. The Bearcats' Emmanuel Appiah had two attempts on goal in the final 10 minutes, but he was turned away by Boerger on both occasions.
The Orange outshot the Bearcats for the game, 21-15. Boerger made seven saves in the win. Hafling totaled six saves for Cincinnati.
Syracuse will play its final home game of the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 26 against Villanova. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
