The Syracuse University volleyball team (14-8, 3-3) used 15 players en route to a 3-0 sweep of Binghamton (10-14, 2-4) on Wednesday night (25-19, 25-17, 25-23) at West Gym.
SU raced out to a 5-1 lead to open the match, thanks in part to two service aces from Ying Shen. The Bearcats, however, clawed their way back into the set and used a 4-0 run to take their first lead at 17-16. The Orange responded with a 9-2 run to end the set for a 25-19 victory, led by Erin Little who had five kills on six attempts.
Binghamton opened the second stanza on a 6-1 spurt, forcing SU to take a timeout. The Orange would take control of the set from that point on, allowing just 11 more Bearcat points for a 25-17 triumph to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.
Little continued to be unstoppable as she connected on five of her seven swings in the second set. The senior had 10 kills and hit .769 in the first two sets.
The third set belonged to the Orange as SU took the first point and never trailed. The lead would grow to eight at 17-9 and SU wrapped up the match with a 25-23 third set triumph.
SU used 15 different players in the match, including all three setters who recorded an assist led by Emily Betteridge who finished with a team-high with 17. Little and Noemie Lefebvre had 10 kills apiece, while Ashley Williams led the defense with 10 digs. SU had a season-high nine service aces.
“It was nice for some new faces to appear in the box score tonight,” interim head coach Kelly Morrisroe said. “The experiences gained tonight will help us for the remainder of the season in the BIG EAST.”
The Orange has two crucial conference matches this weekend as Syracuse hosts Rutgers (8-15, 1-5) on Friday night at 5:00 p.m. and Seton Hall (13-8, 4-2) on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
