SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior running back Delone Carter led Syracuse (3-1) to a 42-7 victory against Colgate (1-2) at the Carrier Dome on Saturday afternoon. It marks the first time since 2003 that the Orange has gone 3-1 through its first four games.
Carter finished with a career-best 172 yards rushing on 14 carries with a career-high tying four touchdowns. It marked the eighth 100-yard career rushing game for Carter, who moves into a tie for eighth on the SU 100-yard rushing game list and is now 11th all-time on the career rushing yards list with 2,290.
Junior quarterback Ryan Nassib had 169 yards on 8-of-15 passing with a touchdown, while junior running back Antwon Bailey and junior wide receiver Van Chew both had 68 yards receiving.
Freshman linebacker Marquis Spruill was the leading defender for the Orange, posting 12 tackles, including six solo stops and two tackles for a loss.
After the SU defense held Colgate to nine yards and a quick three-and-out, Carter put the Orange on the board with a 24-yard touchdown run. The score capped a two-play, 40-yard scoring drive to give Syracuse a 7-0 edge with 4:51 remaining in the first quarter.
As the first quarter wound down, senior cornerback Mike Holmes picked off a Greg Sullivan pass attempt, returning it 42 yards to the Colgate 21-yard line. It marked the first interception of the season for the Orange, and the sixth career pick for Holmes.
Bailey increased the lead, 14-0, finding the end zone with a career-long 37-yard reception. The touchdown, Bailey's first of the season and first receiving score, capped a three-play, 53-yard drive for Syracuse.
Carter tacked on six more less than two minutes into the third quarter, scoring on a nine-yard rush. The four-play, 59-yard scoring drive was propelled by 46 yards on the ground from Carter, including a season-long 36-yard rush. Freshman placekicker Ross Krautman converted the extra point, bumping the Syracuse lead, 21-0, with 13:28 remaining in the third quarter.
Senior cornerback Da'Mon Merkerson had the second interception of the game, picking off a Sullivan pass attempt at SU's 32-yard line. It was Merkerson's first career interception.
Syracuse increased its lead to 28-0 as Carter found the end zone for a third time with a 12-yard touchdown run with 3:00 remaining in the third quarter. The score completed a seven-play, 68-yard drive for the Orange, including 57-yards on the ground for the Copley, Ohio native.
Colgate scored its first points of the contest, 28-7, with 11:23 remaining as Nate Eachus found the end zone with a 12-yard rush up the middle.
The record day continued for Carter with an 18-yard rushing touchdown with 10:11 remaining in regulation, building Syracuse's lead, 35-7. It marked the fourth rushing touchdown of the day for Carter, tying a career-best set against Wyoming in 2006. The three-play, 70-yard Syracuse scoring drive included a career-long 48-yard reception by junior wide receiver Van Chew.
Freshman running back Prince Tyson-Gulley scored his first career touchdown with 4:14 remaining in the game, making it 42-7. Gulley's eight-yard rush up the middle completed a six-play, 60-yard scoring drive, including a 19-yard reception by Beckett Wales, the first of his career.
The Orange enters its first bye week of the season and returns to the field Oct. 9 when it travels to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. to open BIG EAST play against South Florida.
