SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Senior Derrell Smith led the Syracuse defense with 12 tackles, including four for a loss of yards in Syracuse's (7-5 overall, 4-3 BIG EAST) 16-7 loss to Boston College (7-5, 4-4) on Saturday afternoon in the Carrier Dome. It marked the regular-season finale for the Orange, which has qualified to return to postseason play for the first time since 2004. Smith and 23 of his classmates were honored in a pregame senior day ceremony for their commitment to the Orange program.
Smith moved into a tie for 10th-place in career tackles for loss with 24.0 and sophomore safety Shamarko Thomas tallied a career-best 12 tackles, including seven solo stops.
Junior quarterback Ryan Nassib completed 15-of-24 pass attempts for 147 yards, moving into second on the SU single-season record list for completions with 189. Nassib also moved into eighth on the Syracuse season record list for passing yards with 2,095. Junior Marcus Sales was the leading receiver for the Orange, finishing with five catches for 73 yards, including a career-long 26-yard reception in the first quarter.
BC turned its first drive of the contest into three points on a 27-yard field goal by Nate Freese with 7:42 remaining in the first quarter. The field goal capped a 15-play, 62-yard drive that ate 7:18 off the clock.
With the Eagles driving toward the end zone midway through the second quarter, senior cornerback Kevyn Scott halted BC's momentum with his first career interception at the two-yard line.
Boston College doubled its lead, 6-0, with a 29-yard field goal with 1:40 remaining in the first half.
The Syracuse offense found its groove on its first drive of the second half, marching 80-yards on 12-plays to take its first lead of the contest, 7-6. A five-yard touchdown rush by junior running back #Antwon Bailey# capped the drive, which included 36 yards receiving by Sales and 29 yards on the ground by Bailey.
The Eagles quickly regained the lead with a 10-play, 78-yard drive completed by a 1-yard rushing score to make it 13-7 with 4:44 to play in the third quarter.
BC increased its lead, 16-7, with a 22-yard field goal with 6:44 remaining in regulation and held on for the win.
Syracuse will learn its postseason bowl destination on Sunday, December 5, 2010.
