Syracuse Football
Syracuse vs. Boston College
November 27, 2010
Carrier Dome/Syracuse, N.Y.
Head Coach Frank Spaziani
On Andre Williams’ performance:
"Andre certainly stepped up once again. You know Andre’s talent and did we think he’d have a day like that? We can think that. He’s a tough kid and he works hard and like I said before that’s a good recipe for success.”
On how to beat Syracuse:
“We looked at all the highlights and stuff like that and certainly took some stuff from that, but what we tried to do is what we can, what our kids can do with our players, our freshman quarterback and receivers and how we play football. We just got a little unbalanced because of the situation of the game.”
On the Boston College offensive line in the third quarter:
“I believe there was some push, we were getting to the line of scrimmage and making plays. It’s satisfying. We’re getting better every week kept getting better. That’s certainly what we’re striving to do.”
On the defensive performance:
“Certainly that’s a good football team over there in a lot of ways, our guys played hard. That’s a tough physical game, it was a good battle. Our guys hung in there and did a good job.”
Boston College Student-Athlete Quotes
Freshman quarterback Chase Rettig
On the opening drive:
“The first drive made us feel confident. We gained confidence and converted those early first downs. Unfortunately we did not come away with a touchdown, but we were able to put three points on the board. It gave us confidence which translated to the rest of the game.”
On the play of freshman running back Andre Williams:
“Andre (Williams) played great today. Our offensive line played great day. They really stepped up. I have to give a lot of credit to Andre and our offensive line today. We ran the ball a lot today and they had to know it was coming.”
On winning five consecutive games:
“It feels great. Dropping five straight and then coming back to win five straight, puts us with a winning record. Now we can start talking about the Bowl game. It was nice to bus out here and get the win, because the bus ride back will be a good time. Credit to our coaches this week, they prepared us well on both sides of the ball. I think the biggest part of the game was us coming out early on that first drive and establishing our game plan.”
On the play of the offensive line:
“They had a tremendous game across the board. Pass protection and running the ball. Syracuse runs a lot of different stunts and blitzes in those long-distance situations, but we did a good job of getting the ball out in time. We could not have done that without the guys up front. The tight ends did a great job today, too.”
Freshman running back Andre Williams
On his performance:
“I didn’t know how much we were going to run, but we had to show we had a run game because I don’t know if Syracuse was expecting it. I’m a little tired, but I feel fine. Coach now knows he has more than one back and he can be comfortable with me in the game.”
On running the ball in long-distance situations:
“We don’t have that many long-distance run plays, but I know the ones we do have we run very well. Third-and-eight is usually not a running situation, but it shows that the coaches have a lot of confidence in me. We ran the same plays over-and -over again. They were wearing down at the end of the second quarter.”
Freshman offensive tackle Anthony Castonzo
On the offensive line’s performance:
“They (Syracuse) run a lot of stuff scheme-wise, but once we were able to figure it out, make the adjustments on the sideline and know where we were going we were able to hunker down and put everything we had into it. We said we have to leave it all on the field and we did, because we were dying when we came off. We had a lot of fun out there.”
On the second-half performance:
“We knew we had to take over. In our losses there has been a lull where we just wait for something to happen. We knew we had to go out and take it. When they scored to go ahead we knew he had to pick it up and take the ball down the field.”
On freshman running back Andre Williams performance:
“I can’t say Andrea (Williams) surprised us, because we knew he had that ability. I’m sure you saw him bursting through those holes. He just runs with no fear. It was impressive. He was running like a man possessed. He is a physical specimen; he probably isn’t even tired right now.”
On running the ball in long-distance situations:
“There was one play where we ran around the left side and after he called the played in the huddle, everybody thought we heard wrong, but we were able to make our calls at the line and succeed. It is fun to see our coaches have that confidence in the offensive line. We appreciate that.”
On finishing strong:
“It’s really satisfying, especially because it’s the last game of the year. It’s like a culmination of everything we have worked for. We were able to accomplish everything we wanted to all year. The offensive line was able to take over and I’m happy we did it in the last game and on the last drive.”
