HAMILTON, N.Y. – Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ryan Jones recorded 12 saves in his first career start, but the Orange (1-2-0) couldn't hold off defending Patriot League champion Colgate (2-1-0) as the Raiders defeated Syracuse,3-2, in overtime on Monday, Sept 7 at Van Doren Field.
Colgate's Alex Weekes tallied the game-winner with 2:53 left in the extra session when he converted a penalty kick after a hand ball was called on SU junior Daniel McGowan inside the box. Jones got a piece of Weekes' shot, but it still managed to find the upper right corner of the Orange net. It was Weekes' second goal of the night.
Weekes' two-goal performance spoiled Jones' first start. After making three saves and earning the win in his college debut against Cornell Saturday, Jones got the starting nod Monday against the Raiders. His play helped keep the Orange in the game as seven of his stops came in the second half and overtime.
His best save of the night was a dazzling stop on Weekes with 37:55 remaining in regulation that preserved what was then a one-goal Orange lead. He also snared Weekes' header on the rebound to maintain the SU cushion.
Colgate's penalty-kick goal capped off an exciting final 50 minutes of soccer that saw the two squads combine for five goals. Syracuse got on the board first as senior Tom Perevegyencev scored on the first shot of the second period off a pass from sophomore midfielder Kevin Chan-Yu-Tin to give the Orange a 1-0 advantage less than two minutes into the stanza.
The Raiders tied the match in the 67th minute on Weekes' first goal, which was a drive from just outside the box. An unassisted goal by Chris Ross in the 75th minute pushed the hosts in front, 2-1.
Syracuse responded less than a minute later when freshman Mark Brode netted his first career goal at the 75:06 mark on a throw in by junior Justin Arena to even the match at 2-2.
Both sides had chances to win it in the final 15 minutes of regulation, but neither team could tally the winner, setting the stage for Weekes in overtime.
Syracuse returns to action this weekend. The Orange will defend its Mayor's Cup title against Loyola (Md.) and Bucknell. Syracuse opens the tournament on Friday, Sept. 11 with a 5 p.m. match against Loyola (Md.) at Hartwick's Elmore Field.
Match Notes: Chan-Yu-Tin's assist was his first career point ... In addition to Jones, redshirt freshman David Neumann also made his first career start in the match.
