ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Orange men's soccer team (1-3-0) lost its second straight overtime decision, 1-0, to Loyola (Md.) on Friday, Sept. 11 in the opening match of the Mayor's Cup at Hartwick's Elmore Field.
Syracuse dominated the statistics, but Loyola's Jamie Darvill scored the only goal of the match 4:12 into the second overtime period to propel the Greyhounds (2-1-1) to victory. It was the first loss for the Orange in five Mayor's Cup matches.
The Orange outshot the Greyhounds, 21-14, in the contest and held a 4-1 margin in the overtime sessions. However, Loyola goalie Kyle Wittman made seven saves, including two in the second overtime, to keep the Orange off the scoreboard and post his second straight shutout.
Orange senior Tom Perevegyencev was the team's most dangerous player. He tallied four of SU's seven shots on goal and recorded six shot attempts overall. Sophomore midfielder Kevin Chan-Yu-Tin also proved to be an offensive threat with three shots in the contest.
Both Perevegyencev and Chan-Yu-Tin had offensive chances late that could have won it for the Orange, but neither could convert. Perevegyencev's shot with 50 seconds left in regulation was stopped by Wittman and Chan-Yu-Tin's attempt with two seconds to play sailed wide.
In the 103rd minute, Wittman made a save on Chan-Yu-Tin and then denied Perevegyencev again a minute later. Less than a minute after Wittman's save on Perevegyencev, Darvill got on the other end of a cross from Danny Ankrah to score the winner.
Redshirt freshman goalie Ryan Jones made his second straight start for Syracuse in the match and finished with four saves to elevate his season total to 19.
Syracuse will conclude play at the Mayor's Cup on Sunday, Sept. 13 with a 12 p.m. match against Bucknell at Elmore Field.
Match Notes: Redshirt freshman Charles Schoening made his first career start in the match … Senior defender Brien Chamney saw his first action of the season Friday … Chamney missed SU's first three games due to injury … The Orange is now 3-1-1 all-time at the Mayor's Cup since 2007.
