ONEONTA, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Kenny Caceros and redshirt freshman goalie Ryan Jones were named to the all-tournament team on day two of the Mayor's Cup. Caceros and Jones earned the honor despite the Orange's 1-0 loss to eventual Mayor's Cup champion Bucknell (4-1-0) at Hartwick's Elmore Field on Sunday, Sept. 13.
Caceros recorded three shots in Sunday against the Bison and helped the Orange control play in the midfield. Jones registered six saves against Bucknell, including four in the second half, and finished with 10 saves in the tournament after making four stops Friday against Loyola (Md.).
Against Bucknell, the Orange (1-4-0) registered eight shots on goal, but was shut out for the second straight game as tournament MVP Conor O'Brien tallied the game-winner with 2:58 remaining in regulation after a deflection.
Prior to O'Brien's tally, the two teams battled for 87 minutes with neither squad able to gain the upper hand. Jones' play was one of the main reasons the game remained scoreless as he made several spectacular saves to keep the Bison off the board. With eight minutes left, Jones made a terrific diving save on a 35-yard blast by the Bison's Sean King. Two minutes later, he turned away CK Kumah from point-blank range.
Jones' counterpart, Tommy Caso, was just as good. He made eight saves in the game to earn the shutout and denied Orange senior Tom Perevegyencev and sophomore #L.J. Papaleo# on back-to-back chances in the 67th and 68th minutes, respectively.
Overall, Perevegyencev, Caceros and junior Justin Arena led the Orange with three shots each. Arena put two of his chances on goal, including one early in the second half.
Syracuse will look to get back in the win column on Friday, Sept. 18 when it opens BIG EAST play with a 7 p.m. match against Seton Hall at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission to the game is free.
Match Notes: Sunday's game was the first between Bucknell and Syracuse since 1942 … Senior defender Brien Chamney made his first start of the year in the contest … Papaleo saw his first game action as a member of the Orange after missing the first four games of the year due to injury.
