SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore #L.J. Papaleo# tallied his first goal of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 13 against Hartwick, but the Hawks recorded the final two goals of the match to defeat the Orange, 2-1, at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Papaleo's goal came off a free kick in the 31st minute and gave the Orange a 1-0 lead against its Central New York rival. Senior captains Pete Hill and Hansen Woodruff recorded assists on the play as Hill served a free kick into the box after a Hartwick foul. Woodruff re-directed the serve to Papaleo, who found the net with a diving header to record his first goal in an Orange uniform after transferring to Syracuse from Albany.
The Orange maintained the lead until the final minute of the first half when Hartwick's Sam Wright tied the match on a well-placed shot off a corner kick with 29 seconds left in the period.
The Hawks (8-2-2) gained the advantage in the early stages of the second half as Dan Summers scored at the 53:13 mark to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
The Orange generated several scoring opportunities throughout the remainder of regulation, but could not tally the equalizer. Senior Tom Perevegyencev had a ball ricochet to him after a free kick was blocked by the Hartwick defense in the 57th minute, but his attempt sailed high. Woodruff also had an opportunity when he raced past a Hawks' defender in the 78th minute and unleashed a shot from just outside the 18 that was swallowed up by Hartwick goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo.
Syracuse (2-11) continued its offensive surge until the final moments and nearly tied the game with less than five seconds to play. Perevegyencev had a last-second shot from six yards out blocked by a Hartwick defender, and classmate Sean Summerville's chance off the rebound was stopped by Vuolo as time ran out.
Vuolo finished the match with three saves, all of which came in the second half as the Orange outshot the Hawks, 7-6, in the period. Redshirt freshman keeper Ryan Jones also recorded three saves for Syracuse.
The loss ended the Orange's three-game series unbeaten streak against the Hawks. Syracuse was 1-0-2 versus Hartwick in the last three pairings prior to Tuesday night.
The Orange returns to BIG EAST Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 17 when it hosts No. 12 USF at the SU Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Match Notes: Papaleo became the fifth Orange player to record a goal this season … He now has three points on the year … Hill's assist was his second of the season and the third of his career … Woodruff's assist increased his career point total to 61, two behind Eric Puls (1989-92) for 10th on the school's all-time list … It was also his team-leading 10th point of the season.
