MILWAUKEE – The Orange (4-0-2, 1-0-0) remained unbeaten in 2008 with a 1-0 victory at Marquette (1-2-2, 0-2-0) on Friday, Sept. 19 at Valley Fields in its BIG EAST opener.
Senior Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) netted the game-winning goal in the 76th minute off assists from classmate Kyle Hall (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore Justin Arena (Potomac, Md.). It was his first goal of the season. Schomaker re-entered the match at the 72:01 mark and found the back of the net less than four minutes later.
It was Syracuse’s fourth consecutive shutout and fifth blanking in six matches this season. The Orange hasn’t allowed a goal in 419 minutes and 29 seconds dating back to the Colgate match on Sept. 1. The last time the Orange shut out four straight opponents was in 1994 and 1995 when it blanked Oneonta (6-0) and Pittsburgh (0-0) to close the 1994 campaign then began the 1995 season with back-to-back 3-0 victories against Monmouth and Fairfield.
Senior goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) made three saves against the Golden Eagles to earn the shutout, including two stops in the final 17 minutes.
Syracuse recorded the first two shots of the match and earned a pair of corner kicks in the opening 13 minutes as it proved to be the more dangerous team in the first half. The Orange recorded the only shot-on-goal of the stanza when Hall’s attempt was stopped by Marquette keeper Matt Pyzdrowski with five seconds to play in the period.
In the second half, Marquette outshot the Orange, 6-2, but the SU defense was up to the challenge, fighting off three consecutive shots and a corner kick by the Golden Eagles before scoring the winning goal.
The Orange will put its undefeated record on the line Sunday, Sept. 21 when it continues its road trip with a match against #3/3 Notre Dame. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Alumni Field.
Match Notes: It is the second consecutive year the Orange won its league opener … Cavicchia moved ahead of Kevin Bacher and into fourth place on Syracuse’s career saves list (244) ... He also took sole possession of second place on the school’s all-time shutout ledger (19) … His 419 minutes and 29 seconds without surrendering a goal is the longest shutout streak for an SU goalkeeper since 1986 (Chris Whitcomb, 448:40) … Schomaker’s goal was the third game-winner of his career … Hall’s assist was his first of the season … Senior Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) made his first start of the year in the midfield.
