Orange Extends Non-Conference Unbeaten Streak with 1-1 Tie Versus Colgate

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men’s soccer team (1-0-1) extended its non-conference unbeaten streak to 16 games with a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Colgate (1-0-1) on Monday, Sept. 1 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Syracuse improved its record to 9-0-7 in non-league matches since Oct. 18, 2005.
Junior forward Tom Perevegyencev (Budapest, Hungary) tallied SU’s only goal at the 33:37 mark of the first half. It was his third goal in two games and he has three of the Orange’s four goals this season.
“He’s a very efficient goal scorer,” SU head coach Dean Foti said of Perevegyencev. “When he gets chances he’s pretty accurate. He has a knack for scoring and he’s really flourished and shown that this year.”
Perevegyencev’s tally was set up by junior Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) and junior Brien Chamney (Oakville, Ontario). Chamney played the ball to Woodruff who hit Perevegyencev with a long pass down the sideline and Perevegyencev beat Colgate keeper David Cappuccio one-on-one with a shot to the lower-left corner.
The Raiders responded in the second half, knotting the match at one apiece in the 71st minute on a well-placed shot by Chris Ross. Ross launched a right-footed blast from the top of the 18 to the upper-right 90 to tie the match.
SU’s continued offensive pressure generated the best chances to win the game in regulation and overtime. First, with Cappuccio out of position and less than 15 seconds to go in the second half, a header by senior Karol Wasielewski (Gdynia, Poland) ticketed for the net was cleared out of the goal mouth by a Raiders defender. Then, in the second overtime a Woodruff re-direct in the 109th minute just sailed over the crossbar, and the game ended in a deadlock.
Orange goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) stopped seven shots Monday, while Cappuccio finished with six saves for Colgate. Cavicchia moved into fifth on SU’s career saves list. He passed former Orange All-American and current Christian Brothers Academy head coach Joe Papaleo (229) on the school’s all-time ledger and now has 233 career stops.
Syracuse travels to Oneonta, N.Y. this weekend for the prestigious Mayor’s Cup. The Orange plays twice during the tournament, opening with a 5 p.m. match on Friday, Sept. 5 versus UNC-Wilmington. SU will also face Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m.
Match Notes: Perevegyencev’s three goals in 2008 is just one goal shy of his entire 2007 season total (4). It also marked the second time in his career he scored in consecutive matches … Chamney’s assist was the first point of his career … Syracuse improved to 3-1-2 in the last six meetings with the Raiders.
