SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men's soccer team (1-0-0) earned the 400th win in program history on Friday, Aug. 29, defeating Canisius (0-1-0) by the score of 3-0 in the season opener for both teams. A crowd of 1,257 spectators filled the stands at the SU Soccer Stadium to witness the victory, the second-largest crowd for a men's match since the facility opened in 1996.
Syracuse is the sixth BIG EAST Conference team to reach the 400-win plateau joining Connecticut, Rutgers, USF, Seton Hall and Notre Dame.
Junior forward Tom Perevegyencev (Budapest, Hungary) registered a personal-best four points on two goals in the contest. His tallies were separated by just 1:25 in the second half. Junior midfielder Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) had SU's other goal, scoring the team's first of the year in the opening period.
The Orange controlled the tempo the entire game and outshot the Golden Griffins, 22-5, for the match, including a 14-1 margin in the opening half. Syracuse's ability to keep the ball alleviated any pressure on the team's defense.
“When we're good with the ball then we don't have to worry about the defending side of it as much,” Orange head coach Dean Foti said after the match. “If we have it then they can't be shooting and attacking, so we try to work really hard at keeping it when we can.”
SU's hard work offensively generated several good scoring chances early on as senior Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) sent a pair of headers just over the Canisius net in the opening minutes, and Woodruff rifled a shot off the crossbar midway through the half.
Woodruff eventually broke through for the Orange, scoring on a low shot off a feed from sophomore Geoff Lytle (Miami Beach, Fla.) at the 25:14 mark to give SU a 1-0 advantage.
In the second half, Perevegyencev struck at 58:16 to extend the lead to two. He found the net again at the 59:41 mark off a corner kick by sophomore Justin Arena (Potomac, Md.) to put the game out of reach.
Orange goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) stopped all five Canisius shots to record the shutout. He moved into a tie with Rick Fatscher for third on SU's all-time shutout list with 15 career blankings.
Syracuse returns to action on Monday, Sept. 1. The Orange will host Colgate at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission and parking for the match is free.
