Orange Rallies for 3-2 Win Against #20/21 Louisville

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men’s soccer team (8-6-3, 4-6-1) rallied back from a 2-0 deficit in the second half to defeat #20/21 Louisville, 3-2, in its regular-season finale on Saturday, Nov. 1 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange scored twice in the final 21 minutes of regulation to force overtime and junior Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) won it with a goal 2:36 into the extra session.
The victory clinched Syracuse’s first winning season since 1999 and sent seniors Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario), Karol Wasielewski (Gdynia, Poland), Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.), Kyle Hall (Toronto, Ontario), Isaac Collings (Oriskany, N.Y.) and Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) out victorious in their final home match.
Three seniors recorded points in the win. Schomaker had a goal and assisted on Woodruff’s game-winner. Hall tallied two assists and Collings also contributed a helper. Woodruff also finished with three points for the Orange (1g, 1a).
After falling behind, 2-0, 16 seconds into the second half, Orange head coach Dean Foti played with three defenders in the back and sent everyone else forward. The strategy generated more offensive chances and Schomaker finally broke through in the 70th minute when he one-timed a Woodruff cross into the Cardinals’ net to cut the lead to 2-1. Less than eight minutes later, Syracuse tied the game when Collings played the ball to Hall on a corner kick. Hall sent it back to Collings for a serve that junior Tom Perevegyencev (Budapest, Hungary) headed home for the equalizer at 77:32.
With the momentum clearly favoring Syracuse at the end of regulation and the beginning of overtime, Schomaker and Woodruff combined again, this time on the game-winner as Woodruff headed a Schomaker service over the outstretched arm of Louisville goalie Andre Boudreaux at the 92:36 mark to complete the comeback.
“I’m just really proud of these guys,” Foti said after the match. “They played hard every night all year and that’s all you can ask. It was nice to see it all come together for them tonight.”
Louisville (10-6-2, 5-5-1) appeared to be in control of the contest after gaining a two-goal advantage thanks largely to the play of Bryan Kanu who had a hand in both Cardinal tallies. Kanu scored the first goal of the contest in the 23rd minute when he capitalized on an SU turnover and fired a shot inside the near post to put Louisville ahead, 1-0. He also assisted on Gerardo Chavez’s goal at the start of second period that extended the Louisville lead to two.
But it wasn’t the Cardinals’ night as Syracuse played with more urgency in the second half and was able to come away with the victory.
“We were down two goals and to come back and win against a ranked team, there’s no better way to end the home season,” Woodruff said. “We were gaining momentum and I knew if we kept pushing we would find a way to score.”
Cavicchia made four saves in the match for the Orange and Boudreaux finished with four stops for the Cardinals.
Syracuse outshot Louisville, 17-11, for the match and attempted all three shots in overtime.
