PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Syracuse men’s soccer team (4-2-3, 1-2-0) lost its first BIG EAST road match of the season, 3-1, to Providence (5-3-0, 2-1-0) on Friday, Sept. 28 at Glay Field. Sophomore forward Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) scored his seventh goal of the year in the contest, tying him for the conference lead with Connecticut’s O’Brian White, but All-American Ryan Maduro had a hand in all three Providence goals to lead the Friars to victory.
Woodruff’s goal came in the 60th minute off a cross from classmate Tom Perevegyencev (Budapest, Hungary), who made his first career start in the game. The tally drew the Orange to within, 2-1, with 30 minutes to play. Woodruff has seven goals in nine matches in 2007, equaling his total scoring output accumulated in 16 games last year. He’s scored at least once in six of nine games this year and has half of SU’s 14 total goals scored.
Maduro finished the match with five points for the Friars. He assisted on Jonathan Medcalf’s goal that gave Providence the lead 6:57 into the contest, and tallied what proved to be the game-winner 25 seconds before the intermission to extend the Friars’ margin to two. Shortly after his goal brought the Orange within one, Woodruff had a chance to tie the match on a breakaway. A Providence player ran him down from behind in the box, but there was no call and Maduro struck again, scoring on a shot from 20 yards out in the 69th minute to seal the victory.
It was Providence’s third straight win against the Orange.
Nick Cianci also had multiple points for the Friars, registering a pair of assists Friday.
Orange junior keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) made one save in the loss. His counterpart, Timothy Murray, made two stops to improve his record to 5-3-0 on the year.
Syracuse will continue its road trip on Sunday, Sept. 30 with a 3:30 p.m. match against #5/3 Connecticut at Morrone Stadium.
