SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men’s soccer team remained in the hunt for a berth in the BIG EAST Conference Tournament with a 1-0 shutout of #22 USF (10-4-2, 5-4-1) on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Sophomore forward Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) tallied the only goal of the match four minutes and 51 seconds into the contest. The victory increases SU’s point total to nine in the Red Division standings, four behind Cincinnati for the final spot. The Bearcats defeated Villanova Saturday, 1-0.
Woodruff used nifty dribbling to free himself from a USF defender and get a shot off from just outside the six. The ball ricocheted off the arm of Bulls’ keeper Jeffrey Attinella and into the net for Woodruff’s team-leading 10th of the year. The shot was the first of the game for either squad and proved to be the game-winner.
“Hansen probably had the best three chances to score of the entire game,” Orange head coach Dean Foti said. “He has a great ability to free himself up and get shots off.”
Woodruff’s two other chances also came in the first half, and Syracuse would have led 3-0 if not for two diving saves by Attinella when Woodruff was alone in the box.
The Orange (6-6-4, 3-6-0) did an excellent job all night of slipping its forwards in behind the USF backline, leading to near several near breakaways. Both of Woodruff’s other scoring opportunities came on plays where SU played the ball and long and let him run behind the USF defense.
Meanwhile, the Syracuse back four shut down the USF attack, which entered the match with the second-most goals in the conference this year (31). The Bulls registered four shots on goal for the game and only one really tested junior keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) as he made a diving save in the first half to punch a ball wide of the goal. The majority of USF’s other attempts were from long range thanks to the work of defenders Brad Peetoom (Abbotsford, British Columbia), Aaron Bonser (Fairport, N.Y.), Karol Wasielewski (Gdynia, Poland) and Brien Chamney (Oakville, Ontario).
Cavicchia finished with four saves to record his fourth shutout of the season and the 14th of his career. He is tied with Charlie Wilke for fourth on SU’s career shutout list.
“I thought there was a sense of urgency in our play,” Foti said. “The kids did a good job of channeling that energy tonight and we got a good result.”
Bernardo Anor registered five of USF’s 10 shots, and Attinella made three saves in goal in his first collegiate appearance.
The Orange has won two of three matches all-time against USF.
Syracuse will play its final home match of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 7:00 p.m. The Orange will host St. John’s live on ESPNU in its first-ever nationally-televised contest. Fans are encouraged to participate in the Halloween costume contest at the SU Soccer Stadium. It is open to fans of all ages. There will be a contest for kids and another for students and adults.
