Carter became the first SU running back since Damien Rhodes against Buffalo in 2005 to rush for four touchdowns. Carter’s 129 yards was the most in school history by a true freshman, breaking Rhodes’ mark of 82 yards in 2003. His four TDs tied him for fourth on Syracuse’s single-game touchdowns ledger.
Carter’s final touchdown, a 15-yard run, on SU’s second overtime possession provided the winning points. He also carried twice for the Orange in the first overtime and scored on a 16-yard touchdown run. Wyoming’s Wynel Seldon scored on a 14-yard run to send the game to the second overtime.
Syracuse defensive end Jameel McClain and the Orange defense stopped the Cowboys’ attempt on a fourth-and-one on UW’s possession in the second overtime.
In the first quarter, kicker Patrick Shadle scored the only points, connecting on a 43-yard field goal to give SU a 3-0 lead. Wyoming responded with an 80-yard touchdown drive to take an early 7-3 lead in the second quarter.
The Orange took advantage of a Wyoming fumble in the second quarter, driving 21 yards and scoring when Perry Patterson connected with Tom Ferron for a 19-yard touchdown. Wyoming scored a field goal with time running out in the second quarter to tie the game at 10.
Wyoming struck first in the second stanza, scoring on a six-yard touchdown pass. The Orange quickly responded as Curtis Brinkley returned the ensuing kick 40 yards to set up Carter’s first touchdown run of the afternoon.
The two teams traded field goals in the fourth quarter. Senior Terrell Lemon forced his school-record third fumble of the game to setup Shadle’s field goal.
After a punt return and a Cowboys’ personal foul penalty, SU started its next drive at Wyoming’s 14. Two plays later, Carter rushed 13 yards to give the Orange a 27-20 advantage.
Safety Joe Fields intercepted his first career pass on Wyoming’s ensuing drive. After Syracuse punter Brendan Carney pinned the Cowboys at their own eight-yard line, Wyoming put together a 14 play, 92-yard drive that ended with a 15-yard touchdown pass with five seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
Senior linebacker Kelvin Smith led the Orange defense with 13 tackles and six different players recorded a sack.
