Panthers tailback Larod Stephens-Howling rushed for a career-best 221 yards on 27 carries and scored a touchdown to help lead a Pitt rushing attack that churned out 236 yards on the ground. Pitt quarterback Tyler Palko completed his first 13 passes of the game and finished 20-of-24 through the air for 177 yards and a touchdown. Palko also rushed for a touchdown.
Pitt received the opening kickoff and marched 71 yards on six plays to take a 7-0 lead at the 12:31 mark of the first quarter. Palko capped the drive, scoring on a naked bootleg from four yards out. Stephens-Howling carried three times for 51 yards on the drive, including a 40-yard scamper down to the SU four-yard line to set up Palko’s touchdown run.
The Orange defense thwarted another potential Panthers scoring drive later in the quarter. SU stopped Pitt on fourth and one from the Syracuse 25-yard line with 1:21 left in the opening period and the score remained 7-0.
The SU offense responded with an 11-play, 48-yard drive that ended in kicker Patrick Shadle’s ninth field goal of the year, a 44-yarder, to get the Orange on the scoreboard with 12:16 to play in the second quarter and cut the deficit to 7-3.
Stephens-Howling increased Pittsburgh’s margin to 14-3 with 6:28 remaining in the half on a 70-yard touchdown burst through the center of the Orange defense.
The Panthers added to their lead in the third quarter. Palko closed a short 37-yard scoring march when he found Steve Buches alone in the back of the end zone for a one-yard TD hook-up. The touchdown pass increased Pitt’s advantage to 21-3 with 2:31 to go in the period.
Patterson’s 29-yard TD strike to Williams with 4:05 to play and the ensuing two-point conversion produced the 21-11 final tally. Williams caught three passes on the day for 57 yards and hauled in the first touchdown of his SU tenure. Freshman receiver Donte Davis led the receiving corps with a career-best five receptions for 53 yards.
Syracuse safety Dowayne Davis paced the SU defense with nine tackles. Cornerback Terrell Lemon recorded his first career quarterback sack in the fourth quarter against the Panthers. He was the 16th SU defensive player to be involved in a sack this season. He finished the game with six tackles.
