SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Brittany Smith (Milwaukee, Wisc.) scored a career-high 13 points and sophomore Vaida Sipaviciute (Kaunas, Lithuania) notched her seventh double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds as the Orange lost to Georgetown, 58-51, on Feb. 8 at the Carrier Dome.
Smith was 6-for-9 from the field and added seven boards. Sipaviciute went 5-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the charity stripe. She also blocked a pair of shots in the game and has totaled 52 rejections this season, which ranks 10th on SU’s single-season blocks chart. Her 64 blocks last season ranks seventh on that ledger. Sipaviciute’s consecutive free throws made streak ended tonight at 24 on a second half miss. It was the longest such streak since Julie McBride hit 27-straight in 2003-04. Prior to tonight, Sipaviciute last missed a free throw at Cornell on Dec. 29.
Georgetown jumped out to an early 14-2 lead in the first 6:55 of the game. SU quickly responded with six unanswered points to cut the deficit to six, 14-8, with 11:55 left on the clock. With the Hoyas up 20-10 at the 9:13 mark, SU outscored Georgetown 18-10 the rest of the way to pull within a basket, 30-28, at the end of the half. Smith scored eight of the final 10 points for the Orange down the stretch.
In the second half, the Orange started right where it left off as it went on a 7-2 run in the first 4:45 to take a 37-32 lead, its first of the game. Georgetown regained the advantage when it scored 11 of the next 15 points. Kate Carlin drilled a 3-pointer to give the Hoyas a 43-41 edge with 7:22 left in the game. With the score tied, 43-43, Carlin knocked down three-consecutive trifectas to lift the Hoyas to a game-winning 15-8 run.
For the Hoyas (10-13, 3-8), Carlin had a game-high 17 points and was 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point land. Kieraah Marlow posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Bethany LeSueur notched 16 points and Katrina Wheeler added 11 boards.
SU (9-13, 2-9) is back in action when it travels to Louisville on Sunday, Feb. 12 for a 12:00 p.m. BIG EAST contest.
