LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Louisville Cardinals used a 22-3 run in the last 11:21 to defeat Syracuse, 64-48, on Sunday Feb. 12 at Freedom Hall. Sophomore Vaida Sipaviciute (Kaunas, Lithuania) and Louisville’s Jazz Covington both scored 18 points in the contest. Freshman Cintia Johnson (Syracuse, N.Y.) recorded career highs with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Orange entered the second half with a 24-21 advantage, despite being down by as many as eight in the first 20 minutes. The two teams came out after the half and played at a frantic pace, trading baskets for the first nine minutes. SU led 45-42 with 11:21 left after Sipaviciute drained a jumper. From then on, the Cardinals dominated the game and took home the victory. SU mustered just one basket in the final stretch when Johnson scored on a layup. Covington scored nine of her 18 points in the game-clinching run.
Sipaviciute was 9-of-15 shooting from the floor to go along with a game-high four blocks. She moved into fourth all-time in scoring by a sophomore and now has 395 points this season. It is also the seventh time this year Sipaviciute swatted at least four shots. She passed Chris Palombi for ninth all-time on SU's single-season blocks ledger with 56 on the year. Junior Tracy Harbut (Lexington, Ky.) scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the loss.
Louisville jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game with the help of back-to-back 3-pointers from Jessica Huggins and Connie Neal. The Cardinals kept the eight point cushion and led, 16-8, with 12:15 remaining in the half. From that point on, the SU defense held Louisville to just five points as it went on a 16-5 run to end the half to take a 24-21 lead heading into the locker rooms. The Cardinals managed just two field goals in the final 12:15.
Louisville's 21 points was the fewest scored by an SU opponent in any half this season. It shot just 25.7 percent from the floor on 9-of-35 from the field. In the second frame, the Cardinals shot 53.3 percent, hitting 16-of-30 attempts from the floor.
For Louisville (16-6, 7-4), Covington was 7-for-11 from the field and also recorded nine boards. Katie Olson scored 13 points and Neal added 10. Missy Taylor registered 11 rebounds to go along with eight points, all of which she scored in the second half.
