SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) scored his seventh goal of the season to lift Syracuse (7-8-1, 2-8-1) to a 1-0 shutout of DePaul (5-11-2, 4-7-0) in its 2006 season finale on Saturday, Oct. 21 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The victory sent seniors Andrew Hawtin (Toms River, N.J.) and Richard Asante (North York, Ontario) out victorious in their final career match.
Woodruff scored at 55:32 after a shot by Asante was blocked. The rebound caromed to sophomore Kyle Hall (Toronto, Ontario) and he played it across to Woodruff, who ripped a shot into the left side of the Blue Demons’ net from just outside the box. It was Woodruff’s fourth-game winning goal of the year and he finished the season as SU’s leading scorer with 16 points. Hall was credited with his team-leading fourth assist on the play.
Sophomore keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) made nine saves in the contest to record his fourth shutout of 2006 and the 10th of his career. In his first two years, Cavicchia has 13 victories which ranks ninth on SU’s all-time list. He stopped four shots in the second period Saturday to preserve the win, including a leaping save in the 75th minute on a chance by DePaul’s Nathan Feltz after a shot by Mark Plotkin hit off the cross bar.
Hawtin and Asante each started their last SU match. Hawtin finished his career with 33 starts in 35 matches and Asante started his final 35 games and ended his Orange tenure with 63 career games played.
Syracuse came out firing against the Blue Demons, but had some bad luck early. A header by sophomore Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) ricocheted off the cross bar at 17:06 and less than a minute later a shot by Asante deflected off the left post. The Orange stuck with it though and Woodruff came through in the 56th minute with the winning tally.
The Blue Demons earned 11 corners in the contest, including seven in the second half, but the Orange defense diffused each attempt to by the Blue Demons to score the equalizer.
DePaul goalie Brian Visser made five saves in the match. Julian Chille paced the offense with four shots.
The victory tied the all-time series between the two teams at 1-1 and marked the second time in the last three seasons Syracuse has posted a win in its season finale.
