
Patterson Has Career Day in Loss to #6 Louisville

His favorite target was tight end Tom Ferron who caught a game-high seven passes for 88 yards. Wide receiver Mike Williams made a career-high five catches for 98 yards, one shy of his career-best, and a touchdown.
The Orange put together the game’s first scoring drive on its second possession at the end of the first quarter. Syracuse moved into Louisville territory for the first time in the game with 40 yards on nine plays. Patterson connected with junior wide receiver Rice Moss for a 23-yard gain and scrambled for 17 more to lead the charge. Patrick Shadle connected on a 27-yard field goal to give the Orange an early 3-0 lead. Shadle has made a field goal in eight-consecutive games for the Orange.
After fumbles by both teams, Shadle connected on a 35-yard field goal to give the Orange a 6-0 lead. The Cardinals claimed their first lead of the afternoon, scoring on a two-yard run to take a 7-6 advantage at halftime.
Louisville scored the next two touchdowns in the game, both on the ground. Kolby Smith rushed five yards in the third quarter for his first score of the afternonn and Anthony Allen punched it in from one-yard out to give the Cardinals a 15-point lead.
Louisville was driving down the field to add another score, but linebacker Kelvin Smith recorded his first interception of the season at the six-yard line to give the ball back to the Orange. Patterson led SU down the field, connecting on five passes for 84 yards to pull the Orange within eight. His touchdown pass to Williams was the 23rd passing score of his career, tying him with Dave Sarette for fifth in school history.
The Orange pinned the Cardinals inside their own 10-yard line on the ensuing kickoff, but the Louisville offense moved the ball. Smith ran the ball seven times for 77 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown scamper that put the Cardinals up by two scores.
Cornerback Nick Chestnut led the Orange with a career-high 11 tackles, including nine solo stops. Safety A.J. Brown also recorded a career-best with 10 tackles and forced the first fumble of his career. Cornerback Tanard Jackson had seven tackles, one forced fumble and added the first solo sack of his career. Smith and cornerback Terrell Lemon each recovered one fumble.
