
Syracuse Loses to Cincinnati, 17-3

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Delone Carter led the Syracuse offense with 85 yards on 21 carries in the Orange’s 17-3 loss to Cincinnati in front of 20,146 fans. Quarterback Perry Patterson completed 13-of-29 passes for 119 yards. Tight end Jawad Nesheiwat led the team with a career-best four receptions for 14 yards.
Brendan Carney punted eight times for 343 yards and became Syracuse’s all-time leader in punts. Carney has punted 253 times in his career, passing Mike Shafer’s mark of 249. Carney is already SU’s career leader in punting yardage (10,726).
The Bearcats struck first, scoring on a field goal in the first quarter. Cincinnati’s Dustin Grutza connected with Derrick Stewart for 47 yards on the first play of the possession. Dowayne Davis tripped up Stewart at the six-yard line to prevent him from scoring. The Orange defense was able to keep Cincinnati from getting into the endzone on the ensuing three plays and Kevin Lovell hit a 20-yard field goal to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead.
Syracuse tied the game on its first drive in the second quarter. Wide receiver Mike Williams drew a pass interference penalty on the first play of the drive. Carter rushed for 34 yards on the drive and brought the Orange to Cincinnati’s four-yard line. Cincinnati was able to stop Syracuse on a third-and-one attempt, setting up Patrick Shadle’s 23-yard field goal. Shadle has connected on his last 12 field goals and his hit one field goal in each of SU’s nine games in 2006.
Cincinnati responded on its ensuing drive and took the ball to Syracuse’s one-yard line. Not willing to settle for a field goal, Cincinnati decided to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the one. Defensive end Jameel McClain stopped Butler Benton for a two-yard loss to give the ball back to the Orange.
Cincinnati took advantage of good field position in the second half, driving 42 yards to score the game’s first touchdown. Bearcats running back Greg Moore rushed six times for all 42 yards on the drive to give Cincinnati a seven-point lead. Grutza and Stewart connected with each other once again in the fourth quarter, scoring on a 37-yard touchdown pass as the Bearcats claimed a 17-3 lead.
The Orange attempted to answer the Bearcats’ score, twice driving deep into Cincinnati territory, but did not score on fourth-down attempts.
Linebacker Kelvin Smith led the team with 10 tackles and one forced fumble. McClain added nine tackles, and safety Joe Fields and linebacker Ben Maljovec each recorded their second career interceptions.
