Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Orange volleyball team split a pair of matches today at the Boston College Tournament. In its first game, SU beat Boston College 3-1 (30-25, 30-25, 33-35, 30-25) and then lost to No. 3 Stanford 3-1 (25-30, 30-14, 30-21, 30-23). Syracuse ends the opening weekend of the 2005 season with a 2-1 record.
Against BC, four different players tallied double digit kills in part to senior setter Aila Dommestrup’s 50 assists. Seniors Kelly Duan and Kristen Conway paced the attack with 15 and 13 kills, respectively. Senior Katie Allen and sophomore Jen Malcom added 10 kills. Duan and Allen both had six block assists, while Conway tied her career-best with three solo blocks. Malcom added four more block assists for the Orange.
Sophomore libero Joscie Kaup recorded 17 digs while matching her career-high with three service aces.
For the Eagles, Dorota Niemczewska had a match-high 18 kills while setter Verena Rost posted 41 assists. Allison Anderson tallied 21 digs for tops in the match.
SU began its match against the defending national champion, No. 3 Stanford, in similar fashion, winning game one, 30-25. The Orange jumped out to an early 6-1 lead behind Conway, who posted a kill and two service aces in a row against the Cardinal.
SU kept the five point cushion until a kill by Foluke Akinradewo started a Stanford run of four consecutive points, closing the Orange lead to 18-17. The teams traded points until the score became 27-25. Conway delivered another kill, one of her team-high 10 in the match, to put SU up 28-25. Allen and Dommestrup were able to stuff a Kristin Richards attack for the next point, and then a Cardinal attack error ended the game.
Stanford took control in the next three games behind Richards’ 22 kills and 12 digs. Akinradewo added 15 kills and match-best 13 digs, while Cynthia Barboza registered 15 kills.
Dommestrup tallied 34 assists and six total blocks in the loss, while Stanford setter Bryn Kehoe had 61 assists.
