LOUISVILLE, KY – Junior Perry Patterson recorded a career-high 259 passing yards, connecting on 19-of-39 attempts, as the Orange lost to #17/18 Louisville today, 41-17, at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. Sophomore Rice Moss established new career highs with six catches and 116 yards.

Redshirt freshman Paul Chiara was SU’s leading rusher on the day with 39 yards on eight carries. He also caught four passes for 34 yards. Nick Chestnut caught his third touchdown of the year and totaled 44 yards receiving.

Junior Brendan Carney punted nine times in the game and in the process established an SU standard for single-season kicks with 84. He passed Mike Shafer, who had 77 in 2001. Carney also took over the top spot in single-season punting yards with 3,491. He surpassed Shafer, who had 3,282 in 2001.

The host Cardinals, angling for a favorable postseason bowl position, scored on their first possession of the contest. On its second play from scrimmage, quarterback Brian Brohm connected on a 60-yard scoring toss to Montrell Jones. The extra point gave Louisville a 7-0 advantage 1:55 into the game.

Syracuse answered with Patterson teaming up with Chestnut on a 36-yard touchdown play. Chestnut's reception was his seventh of the season -- and his third for a touchdown.

Senior Kellen Pruitt thwarted Louisville's next drive by picking off a Brohm pass. The Orange was unable to take advantage, but on Carney's punt, the Cardinals misplayed the return and senior DeAndre LeCaille recovered at the Louisville 25. Syracuse emerged with a 33-yard field goal by John Barker, and a 10-7 lead with 7:41 remaining in the first.

Louisville regained control on its ensuing possession on a nine-yard touchdown run by Kolby Smith. Smith accounted for the drive’s final 14 yards. At the end of the first period, Louisville led, 14-10.

Early in the second quarter, a personal foul facemask call on the Orange allowed Louisville to march into SU territory. A pass interference call and a Smith 19-yard run set up the Cardinals for another touchdown, this time a 19-yard connection between Brohm and Jones to put the Cardinals up, 21-10.

Louisville extended its lead to 24-10 on its first possession of the second half when Arthur Carmody connected on a 23-yard field goal.

Freshman running back Paul Chiara scored the first touchdown of his collegiate career and Ricky Krautman's extra point helped pull SU within a touchdown of host Louisville, 24-17, with 6:29 left in the third quarter. The score was set up by Kelvin Smith, who picked off a Cardinals' pass.

Later in the quarter, Brandon Johnson picked off a Patterson pass after a deflection at the SU 25-yard line. Carmody hit his second field goal of the day, this time a 43-yarder, to give Louisville a 27-17 advantage.

Louisville added a pair of late touchdowns to take the game, 41-17. Smith caught a pass for 57 yards, and then George Stripling finished the drive with a nine-yard touchdown rush. Following a Jon Russell interception, Stripling broke out a 89-yard touchdown scamper to cap the scoring.
