SYRACUSE, N.Y., Nov. 1, 2005 – For the second-straight match, seniors Kelly Duan and Kristen Conway both recorded double-doubles, but it was Albany coming away with a 3-2 (21-30, 25-30, 30-17, 30-21, 16-14) comeback victory against the Orange tonight in the state’s capital. Senior setter Aila Dommestrup recorded 57 assists in the loss, which is SU’s first since Oct. 8.
Duan led the team in kills with 21 while adding 14 digs. Conway chipped in with 13 kills and 11 digs. Sophomores Cheryl Cobbina and Jen Malcom also tallied double-digit kills with 15 and 11, respectively. Sophomore Joscie Kaup dug 22 attacks in her return to the court after missing the match against Seton Hall.
Early in game one, Albany led 6-2. Duan stepped to the service line following an attack error by the Great Danes and rattled off six points to give SU a 9-6 advantage. Malcom had three kills during that span while Conway had two. The Orange would keep control of the game throughout, with Albany getting as close as 20-18. SU responded by scoring 10 of the last 13 points to secure the game one win.
In the second game, Albany had a 12-8 lead before SU scored four points in a row to tie the game 12-12. SU took a three-point lead at 18-15 after Conway stuffed an Albany attack. The Great Danes fought right back to tie the score 18-18, then 19-19. A service error, an attack error, and a Cobbina kill pushed SU past Albany, 22-19, and it would not look back. Ashlee Reed put down a kill to close within one at 26-25, but the Orange scored the next four points to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Duan had a pair of kills down the stretch.
Albany came out firing in game three and took a commanding 14-3 lead. The Great Danes put down 10 kills early in the game for the advantage. SU could not mount a comeback and only got as close as six points at 14-8. Albany went on to win game three, 30-17.
In game four, Albany again took control early to take the game. The two teams were tied 4-4, but Ashley Crenshaw broke the tie with a kill. That was the last tie in the game as Albany rolled from there. A 9-2 run put the Great Danes up 13-6 and that is all that was needed to force a fifth and final game. Albany took game four, 30-21.
The two teams stayed close to each other in game five, with ties at 4-4 and 8-8. Malcom notched two more kills to put SU up 11-8, but Albany responded with three points of its own to tie the score again, 11-11. Cobbina put SU back up one with a kill, but Blair Buchanan deadlocked the game again with one of her own. Cobbina came up big again with two more kills to give SU match point at 14-12. Hunter put down another kill to save Albany the first time. Ashley Green stopped an SU attack at the net to tie the game, 14-14. With Reed at the service line, Hunter and Buchanan tallied the final two kills of the match to complete the comeback for the Great Danes.
For Albany (23-3), Hunter registered a match-best 23 kills, while Shelby Goldman tallied 18. Reed totaled 15 kills and seven digs. Buchanan almost recorded a triple-double as she had 66 assists, 14 digs, and nine kills. Ashley DeNeal posted 26 digs, while Kristin Fiorillo had 20.
This is the second-straight season that Albany has defeated the Orange (22-8) in five games. The loss ended a season-long 10-match win streak for SU.
The Orange is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 6, when it hosts BIG EAST foe Seton Hall at 2:00 p.m. in Manley Field House. The match is the last home-match for the five graduating seniors.
