SYRACUSE, N.Y., Nov. 6, 2005 – Seniors Kelly Duan and Kristen Conway made the most of their final match in Syracuse to lead the Orange to a 3-1 (30-16, 30-16, 26-30, 30-22) win against Seton Hall today at Manley Field House. Duan led all players with 18 kills, while Conway posted her third-consecutive double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs.
The win improves SU to 23-8, 10-2 in the BIG EAST. That is tied for the most conference wins in the school’s history, which it also did in 1989 and 1990.
Senior Aila Dommestrup dished out 43 assists in the win. Sophomore Cheryl Cobbina added 13 kills while sophomore Joscie Kaup totaled 19 digs. Sophomore Jen Malcom had 12 total blocks which is one short of her career high. SU registered 19 blocks to Seton Hall’s six, and hit .308 as a team while holding the Pirates to a mere .079 hitting percentage.
SU held a slight lead early in game one, 6-5. Four SHU attack errors and a block from Duan and Malcom gave the Orange an 11-5 advantage, and SU did not look back. It extended its lead to 19-12, and then SU went on a five-point run to seal the game one victory. The Orange stuffed four-consecutive attacks in that stretch. SU won the first game, 30-16.
The Pirates had an early lead in game two, 10-7, before SU took control of the game by finishing on a 23-6 run. Duan and Cobbina both had five kills in the 30-16 game two win.
Midway through game three, SU went up 13-10 on a Katie Allen kill. The Pirates responded with a six-point run. Two aces and a couple of SU miscues contributed to the rally. SHU did not let go of the lead from there. The Pirates extended its lead to 20-15 on an SU attack error. The closest the Orange got was 22-18, when Conway put down a kill. Seton Hall forced a fourth game, winning 30-26.
The two teams battled back and forth at the beginning of game four and were tied 9-9. A Cobbina kill and service ace put SU up 11-9. After a service error made the score 11-10, the Orange tallied three more points to go up 14-10. Malcom and Cobbina both had kills in that stretch. SU extended its lead to six, 20-14, when Dommestrup and Malcom combined for a block. SU did not let the Pirates back in, and took the final game, 30-22.
For Seton Hall (12-16, 2-10 BIG EAST), Amber Davis had a team-high 12 kills. Breanna Leisner and Jessica Pompei both notched 13 digs, while Tricia Meyers had 10 of her own. Brittany Rahrer distributed 37 assists in the loss.
The Orange is away for its final two regular season matches next weekend. On Nov. 11, SU travels to Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats at 7:30 p.m. In the season finale, the Orange takes on No. 7 Louisville in Kentucky. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. against the Cardinals.
