Junior midfielder Sean Lindsay (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland Panas) scored a career-high six points (four goals, two assists) and sophomore goaltender Jay Pfeifer (Towson, Md./Gilman) recorded a season-high 16 saves to lead No. 4 Syracuse to a 13-8 win against No. 11 Cornell Tuesday night at the Carrier Dome. The Orangemen broke open a one-goal game with a three-goal spurt in the latter portion of the third quarter and never looked back to up its season record to 7-2. Cornell had its five-game win streak snapped and is now 6-3 on the 2003 campaign.
Cornell's J.P. Schalk opened the scoring with a shot to the top of the net from 10 yards out on the right side. Syracuse would respond more than a minute later as Lindsay tallied his first goal of the night on an unassisted marker.
Junior All-American Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) gave the Orangemen their first lead with a dart from 15 yards up top just as junior Tim DeBlois was returning from a one-minute slashing penalty to make it a 2-1 game. Orange midfielder Kyle Olson (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) found the back of the net with 6:29 remaining and Lindsay assisted on a score by Liam Banks (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) less than a minute later to increase the advantage to 4-1.
Freshman Joe Boulukos gave Cornell its second goal of the contest with a strong shot on the run from the left side with four minutes remaining in the first period. Lindsay netted his second goal on a quick shot past Big Red goaltender Brandon Ross directly off a pass from Michael Springer (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) to extend the lead to 5-2.
With Cornell serving a 30-second penalty for an illegal substitution, junior midfielder Steve Vallone (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) scored a man-up goal with 11:08 left in the half to extend the lead to 6-2. Cornell's Andrew Reenstra cut the deficit back down to three goals with a tally 52 seconds later on an assist from freshman Joe D'Arrigo. Pfeifer was solid for the remainder of the first half, saving six shots to keep SU's lead at 6-3 heading into halftime.
Cornell took advantage of a Syracuse penalty early in the third quarter as Sean Greenhalgh scored with a quick shot left of the goal on a pass from Andrew Collins. Just 2:07 later, the Big Red man-up squad was successful again as Kevin Nee made it a one-goal game off another assist from Collins.
The Orangemen would break a 21:28 scoreless stretch and break away from the Big Red with three goals during a 54-second span. Lindsay scored twice during that stretch.
Cornell attackman Dave Pittard scored his 11th goal of the season with a strike from 15 yards out to make the score 9-6. Syracuse caused a turnover just inside the Cornell zone and Powell converted on a bouncer from the right side off a pass from Springer. Powell scored again with 10:01 left in the game to give SU its largest lead of the night (11-6).
The two teams traded goals to finish the game. Freshman midfielder Brian Crockett (Yorktown, N.Y./Yorktown) and Powell scored for the Orangemen, while Greenhalgh and Pittard tallied for the Big Red.
