In its first home game since February 23, the top-ranked Syracuse men's lacrosse team defeated Hobart, 19-4, in front of 5,893 spectators at the Carrier Dome. Ten different Orangemen scored as SU holds onto the Kraus-Simmons Trophy for the 16th consecutive season. The winner of the Syracuse-Hobart game claims the silver trophy, named in honor of legendary SU coach Roy Simmons Sr. and former Hobart coach Babe Kraus. The tradition is 17 years old.
Junior attackman Michael Springer (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) scored a game-high four goals and in the process recorded the 100th goal of his career. He became the 17th player in school history to reach the century mark in career goals and now has 102 to his credit.
Sophomore attackman Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage), who had a goal and three assists versus the Statesmen, also reached a milestone. He surpassed the 100-point plateau and now owns 103 points for his career.
Senior attackman Josh Coffman (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) set a career-high with five assists. After Jon Bogosian got Hobart on the board at the 7:27 mark of the first quarter, Coffman set up SU's next four goals to close out the period which helped the Orangemen to a 6-1 advantage.
Syracuse (6-1) outscored Hobart, 7-0, in the second quarter. The Orangemen got two goals from senior midfielder Spencer Wright (San Diego, Calif./Junipero Serra) and a goal and an assist from Springer in the second stanza.
Hobart (3-3) notched its second goal of the game at the 7:10 mark of the third period. Dan Cesare punched in a pass from Kris Shore. Nate Hill tallied an unassisted goal just 13 seconds into the fourth quarter to cut into SU's lead, 16-3.
Junior midfielder Brett Walther (Ardmore, Pa./Malvern Prep) assisted on back-to-back man-down goals for Syracuse which increased the Orangemen's lead to 18-3 with 12:31 remaining. Hill registered his second goal of the contest, and Hobart's fourth overall, at the 11:03 mark of the fourth. SU freshman midfielder Kyle Olson (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) closed out the game's scoring with his second goal of the season at the 2:52 mark.
Syracuse travels away from home for the fifth-consecutive weekend when it plays at Brown on Saturday, March 30, at noon.
