
Eagles Snap Syracuse Winning Streak, 41-20

BOSTON, MASS. -- Boston College scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to defeat Syracuse, 41-20, in front of 36,221 at Alumni Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The loss snapped SU's three-game winning streak. The Orangemen are now 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the BIG EAST. Boston College improved to 6-4 and 1-4 in the BIG EAST.
SU trailed B.C., 20-13, before sophomore running back Walter Reyes extended his own school record with his 16th rushing touchdown of the season on an eight-yard jaunt with 6:52 remaining in the third quarter. Collin Barber converted the extra point to tie the game at 20-20.
Boston College reeled off the last 21 points of the game, beginning with a seven-yard touchdown pass to tight end Sean Ryan for a 27-20 lead with 2:22 left in the third quarter. Brandon Brokaw scored his second touchdown of the day on a one-yard run with 10 minutes left in the game. Derrick Knight added an insurance touchdown on a 70-yard scamper with 3:40 remaining for the final 41-20 score.
The Eagles used a no-huddle offense on its first possession, going 74 yards on eight plays. Brokaw capped the drive with a one-yard scoring plunge for a 7-0 B.C. lead at 11:53 of the first quarter.
Barber brought Syracuse within 7-3 at 8:59 of the first quarter with a career-long 50-yard field goal. It tied for the10th-longest field goal in SU history, and the longest since Nate Trout?s 50-yarder in 1998.
Sandro Sciortino added field goals from 29 and 26 yards out to build a 13-3 B.C. lead at the end of the first quarter.
Syracuse senior quarterback Troy Nunes connected with Jamel Riddle on a seven-yard scoring strike at 12:39 of the second quarter, setting the score at 13-10.
The Syracuse defense stiffened after the Riddle's touchdown, limiting the Eagles to 40 yards of offense the rest of the half. Barber converted a 29-yard field goal attempt with 1:09 left in the quarter to tie the game at 13-13.
Senior linebacker Clifton Smith recorded his first career interception on the last play of the first half, picking-off Eagle quarterback Brian St. Pierre on the Syracuse 28-yard line.
B.C. used its first possession of the second half to take a 20-13 on a five-yard run by Derek Knight at 11:58 of the third quarter.
Reyes became the seventh Orangeman to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season with 95 yards on 14 carries, bringing his season rushing total to 1,025 yards on 170 attempts. It is the seventh-highest single-season total in SU history. Knight led B.C. with 171 yards on 19 carries.
Nunes finished 14-of-34 for 131 yards. St. Pierre completed 22-of-24 passes for 284 yards. Riddle led SU with 42 yards receiving on four catches. Ryan led all receivers with six receptions for 105 yards.
Syracuse senior Mike Shafer punted four times for 167 yards to become SU's all-time punt yardage leader with 9,770 yards.
Syracuse will have a bye week to prepare for its season finale against top-ranked Miami in the Carrier Dome on Saturday, Nov. 30.
