Former Temple standout, Gabriella Matautia joined Syracuse volleyball as an assistant coach in March 2023 and is entering her third season with the Orange. Matautia brings a combined nine years of coaching experience from the collegiate, high school, and club levels.
“We are so excited to welcome Gabriella to our program,” said coach Ganesharatnam. “She brings a lot of playing experience, coaching expertise, and energy. Gabriella's coaching skill set will fit well in our scheme and what we are building here at Syracuse.”
“I’m super grateful for the opportunity to coach here at Syracuse,” said coach Matautia. “Coach Bake and Akiko are building something special here and I’m ecstatic to be a part of it. With the environment and culture we have on the Hill we can accomplish big things, and I’m so excited to get to work.”
Since 2018 she has served as the head coach, director of operations, and recruiting coordinator for the Aloha State Volleyball Club. During her time with Aloha State, she was responsible for player development, running practices, creating workout and drill plans, and logistics.
Matuatia was a graduate assistant for the University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team (2016-18). She was responsible for opponent scouting reports and film sessions for the Rainbow Wahine. In 2016 she was an assistant coach for the Monalua high school boys’ varsity program.
The Ewa Beach, Hawaii native spent her collegiate career playing at Temple for Ganesharatnam from 2010 to 2013. Matautia (1,250 kills) sits 12th on the Owl's all-time kills ledger and is the all-time leader in single-season service aces (41, 2012). The right-side hitter also has the fourth most kills in a single season, as she finished the 2012 campaign with 437 kills for Temple.
Matautia collected a plethora of accolades during her collegiate career at Temple. She was named to the Athletic Director’s Honor roll three times (2010-11, 2011-13, 2012-13) and earned a spot on the Presidents Honor Roll during her senior year (2013-14). In 2012 she was tabbed an Atlantic 10 First-Team selection and garnered All-Championship Team honors. The following year Mautuatia landed on the American Athletic Conference First-Team (2013). In her final season, she was named the 2014 Temple female student-athlete of the year.
In high school, Matautia was named all-state as a senior and served as a team captain at Moanalua. In her junior campaign at Kapolei high school, she was an all-conference honorable mention and was part of the conference championship team. She spent her freshman and sophomore years at Seoul American high school and was a two-time all-conference and all-tournament all-star selection.
