A tremendous student and athlete, Cammock excelled as a sprinter on the track team, where she holds the program's school record in the 4x100-meter relay and in the classroom where she majored in public health at the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics.
Below are words from the Cammock family about Sabrina that were written for her memorial service:
God promises - "When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you" (Isaiah 43:2, NLn. Now more than ever, we need the reassurance of His words. Sabrina Marsha-Gaye Cammock, age 21 of Queens, New York, passed away unexpectedly on S turaay March 7, 2015. Sabrina was born in Kingston, Jamaica and came to the United States when she was nine years old. She is a past student of the Allen Christian School and The Mary Louis Academy (TMLA). At the time of her passing, she was a senior. at Syracuse University where she was studying public health.
At the Allen Christian School Sabrina a was an excellent student finishing at or close to the top of her class. It was at Allen that she started to build on her athleic prowess. She soon learned the game of basketball and was a member of the JV team where, given her natural athleticism, she-quickly excelled at the game.
Among her many interests was the love of music and singing. She taught herself to play the piano, joined the band playing the flute, sang on the choir and with her angelic voice would fill the air with renditions of popular songs and those she had written. At her graduation, among the many awards/accolades she received, was the honor of singing a solo tor her graduating class. That moment not only brought joy to the entire school population, but left an indelible mark on her that would come to epitomize the way she lived her life in the service of others.
After Allen, Sabrina joined the TMLA family, another institution that helped to mold her into the fine young woman we have come to know. It wasn't until Sabrina went to TMLA that she expanded her interest in track. During her sophomore year, she tried out for the track team and made it. Under tile guidance of her track coaches, Mr. and Mrs. Jordan, Sabrina not only gained an interest in track but developed a passion for the sport that eventually would come the focus of her life. The following quote from Her coach provides a good sense of where Sabrina started her journey in track: "it was only a year prior that she had started running. She joined the team as a sophomore who didn't know how to use her hands or her feet or even follow the rules. She disqualified herself from a meet for blatantly switching lanes during a sprint."
Consistent with her indomitable spirit, she worked hard at track and by the time she was leaving TMLA,she was an accomplished sprinter with many awards and distinctions to her name. Up to the time of her passing she held many records at the school. One such record was winning the NYC 100 meters dash for high school girls for the 2010 track season.
She was a very dynamic person at school. She sang on the choir, was part of the dance club and also started to write short stories and songs that she only shared with a select few. At TMLA Sabrina again utilized he ice to bring smiles to the faces of all those who came in contact with her. She would sing on the school's team bus going to and from track meets, boosting the spirit of the team in preparation for competition or lifting their mood when things did not go so well.
Sabrina continued to build on her track skills, competing in multiple events and winning her fair share. She was particularly fond of the Catholic High School Meet at Icahn Stadium, NY. This was very symbolic for her because she sang the National Anthem at the meet-and went on to win the 100 meter dash. Another win that she was extremely proud of was the inaugural New York Relays Girls Championship 100 Meter Dash.
To demonstrate how serious she was about track, her college essay was focused on track and what it meant to her. "Life is like a sprint with different components to it; there is your start,
maintaining your form, and finishing strong. I believe Syracuse University will fulfill my educational sprint in life." (Sabrina Cammock) She was accepted into six different colleges, even to a couple on full scholarships. However, she fell in love with Syracuse University on the very first day she toured the campus.
Her journey at Syracuse began as most college journeys do, with challenges in being away from home for the first time, and having full responsibility for all aspects of one's daily life. She embraced the challenge. She continued to perform well academically while focusing on track and competing at an even higher level.
She relished the higher level of competition rec- ognizing the discipline that was required to train and compete at this level. She never missed a practice even when she was hurting physically.
Apart from her focus on track, Sabrina was a remarkable student, excelling academically. After her freshman year, Sabrina made the Dean's List every single semester, and was named "Scholar-Athlete" on one such occasion. She was poised to graduate with a 3.9 GPA and with a scholarship to attend Syracuse University Whitman School of Business to pursue her MBA.
While at Syracuse, Sabrina met the love of her life, Keenan Hale. They shared many things in common, a Christian upbringing, a passion for staying fit, and the pursuit of academic excellence.
Sabrina is deeply missed by her beloved parents and her siblings Alyssa, Matthew, Jaden and Kenneth. She also leaves to mourn her boyfriend/best friend, Keenan Hale, her grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, team mates, friends and many others who cherished and loved her dearly.
Sabrina's sprint in the race of life is now complete. She lived her short life to the fullest. She ran hard, sang beautifully, and excelled academically. She departed this life to spend eternity with her Lord and Savior on March 7, 2015.
Lord God, source and destiny of our lives, in Your loving providence You gave us Sabrina to grow in wisdom, beauty, knowledge, and grace. Now You have called her home to Yourself. As a family we grieve the loss of one so young and struggle to understand Your purpose. We hope that You grant us the opportunity to be reunited safely in Your presence. Draw Sabrina to Yourself and give her full stature in Christ. May she stand with all the angels and saints, who know Your love and praise Your saving will. Sabrina, until we meet again, sleep well, sleep well.
