Syracuse Student-Athlete Quotes
Drew Allen, Quarterback, Grad Student
On returning the field:
“I went out there and I was comfortable. All the experience I have had over the past five years, going up against great defenses in practices and being in a lot of game type situations, I had no jitters. I was calm. To be honest, I had a lot of fun. When it got down to crunch time it was still fun but there was still a sense of urgency that was there.”
On the excitement of playing and starting:
“I went out there and ultimately we wanted to win, I wanted to win. I don’t want to win for myself; I want to win for the guy that was just up here talking (Coach Shafer), and all those guys in the blue and orange. We came up short. Obviously the excitement of everything and having my family there that’s been there for me throughout everything – having them in the stands was a great feeling. Ultimately we wanted to come out with a win. Luckily its game one and we have 11 more to go guaranteed and we are going to learn from today.”
Marquis Spruill, Linebacker, Senior
On the communication on defense:
“It went smooth for the first game. We had a few bumps here and there and missed some big plays because of it. When we go out to practice we work on the things we learn from the game. It will take time but we will get it right.”
On being a senior leader after the team allows big plays:
“It’s frustrating but you can’t get down on big plays. You have to keep going and continue to lead. Keep pushing and they will follow. You need to keep the spirits high and keep going.”
Rob Welsh, Defense End, Senior
On the affect the interception will have for you:
“I don’t want it to change how people look at me. I hope people, when they watch me, say he works hard and he tries hard and he does what he is supposed to do. I think I try for it not to go to my head. I think I was in, but the ref said it wasn’t in so it wasn’t in. But I’m not going to let this have an effect on me. I am just looking forward to Northwestern and getting back there on Monday and start game plans.”
On what he saw on that play:
“It’s funny you say that because out of all the plays that play I just felt like I wasn’t in my own body. It was funny because Coach called a great call and I did exactly what I was supposed to do. I dropped and looked at the quarterback’s eyes and he just threw it to me. Actually I didn’t even catch it clean. I bobbled it a little bit then I caught it. Then when I caught it I said ‘Oh I have the sideline’ and I just switched hands and got to the end zone as quick as I could.”
Brandon Reddish, Cornerback, Junior
On the strip and recovering the fumble and how it gave the offense a boost:
“When we stepped into the play we saw that it was open because of the way he had the ball. So I kept stepping to the play and that’s all I did.”
Jeremi Wilkes, Senior, Safety
Thoughts on Allen Robinson coming in:
“We didn’t think anything of it. We treated him like any other receiver. We just wanted to come out here and play football. Credit to him, he came out and made a few good plays, but no matter who the receiver was we just wanted to come out and play hard.”
On his interception in the first half:
“I was baiting the quarterback. We practiced that route a lot in practice—credit to the coaches for emphasizing the route to us. I baited the quarterback to throw to the outside tight end and I just jumped the route.”
Jerome Smith, Junior, Running Back
On his run game and Penn State’s run-stop:
“I think they built a really good run-stop. They are a really good defense.”
On quarterback Drew Allen and what he noticed in the huddle:
“He is a sheriff. Everyone listened to him.”
On corrections for next week:
“Turnovers. We want to eliminate the turnovers and win the game.”
On his two touchdowns in this game, when it took him nine games to get a touchdown last year:
“I trained really hard this summer to take care of things to be in shape at the end of a drive and be able to finish on the goal line. It is a good feeling because the hard work you put in paid off.”
Ashton Broyld, Sophomore, Running back
On the outcome:
"We got a little frustrated. It was a tough one. We definitely were frustrated."
On the season opener:
"Penn State gave us their best shot. Unfortunately we didn't make the plays that we needed to make to win the game. That's where we fell short."
On his prediction for future games:
"It's a long season. We still have plenty of games left to play. Hopefully we just get better and better each day."
Prince-Tyson Gulley, Senior, Running Back
On the potential comeback:
"We definitely could have come back. A lot of good things happened for us, with Rob Welsh making that great play. We thought we could definitely get back in this game."
On his feelings about the outcome:
"We definitely let this one get away. We thought that we had it. We know we have a lot of things we have to work on, like the stuff we need to clear up with the coaches and the players as well. We are on to the next game and trying to put this one behind us."
